Fishing With The Ole Lady
Dahoffman72 replied to BassMouth87's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
I had a similar event though it was not fishing, took my bride on her first snowmachine ride all out and about town, as we came back ip the driveway I thought "I'd impress her with my skills". Rolled up to the house, hit the brakes and cranked the handlebars, thinking I would slide right up to the porch... NOooooooo, I slung her off the back and she rolled up to the porch. she has never gotten on a mchine with me again. Oh the best laid plans oft go awry! -

Wow, so much knowledge to absorb, and more to practice. I may have to quit my day job :-) -

Flytire, the wing and hackle are very similar to the fly I am working on (Tony Route's Sockeye Orange). I believe if I tie the wing material in as mentioned above, (butt of the material toward the shank) and fold it back and tie in, it will give the wing the angle desired. Thanks to all for your input and guidance. -

Awesome, Thanks -
I have seen several mentions in some of the tying books I have about attaching a hackle using the reverse wing method, but have not been able to a suitible description of this. Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Thanks for the help

Yea, not sure what happened, but seems someone removed the screwy photos (Thanks), does make it a bit easier for a lefty though.

Fishing/Fly Fishing App
Dahoffman72 replied to wayne offord's topic in Fly Fishing Gear & Techniques
I have an app called Fly Tyer Pro, I have it on my IPAD, but it works with iPhones as well. Not the greatest, but has a decent number of recipes. -
Fortunately I have never had a bad experience in a fly shop, everyone I have met have been professional and very helpful in furthering my knowledge and cementing my desire to continue. Although, I have had the displeasure in an archery shop and feel your pain. I think I would broach the subject with the owner as Peterjay said, she'd probably appreciate the insight to her employees.

I have been working on a couple Sockeye flies, I saw one called the Mini Krystal Shrimp and decided to try my luck at making something similar.

Greetings to all, I found this site the other day whilst looking for new and interesting things about fly fishing and tying. I have lived in Delta Jct since 1989 and Alaska since 82 still consider myself a rank amateur with regard to fly fishing and tying, but enjoying every moment. Looking forward to interacting with everyone, and learning as much as I can. If you find yourself in the interior, give me a shout and perhaps we can sling a few bugs about.

Utyer, you are correct, I did clean up a lot for the photo, besides it is fishing season here in Alaska, tying season comes after the snow fall (typically next end of month). The vice is not setup for tying at the moment, due to beinbg lefthanded and a noob I have a need to set it each time I tie based on fly size, type etc. As for the phone; though it seldom rings, it never rings for me, your right I should move it. Thanks for the input, Dave

I think the Grayling is a very underrated fish, using the right gear (3wt or lighter) they are every bit as much fun to catch as anything I have caught, and they can nearly always be enticed to come up and play.
