  1. Cool looking flies. Gonna tie some of these up for the spring. Stripers should jump all over it when the alewife show up.
  2. Thank you for all the replies.,I may try the boiling water trick and see if it calms them down a bit. Hate to throw them away!

  4. How do you guys go about picking out a good bucktail? Yet again I spent good money on a crappy one . The hairs flare so badly it's basically unusable. I don't have a fly shop anywhere near where I live anymore and I'm kind of at the mercy of my local tackle shop( a great shop but kind of a limited selection of tying stuff) I thought I had a handle on what to look for but apparently I just got lucky the past couple of times. Will probably have to wait until the fly fishing shows come around and stock up then but definitely frustrated. Any advice?
  5. Cool. Thanks. I will try it .'good looking patterns.
  6. I've been experimenting with the craft fur recently . Do you have any problems with fouling with it? I like it because it comes nicely tapered out of the bag . I made some epoxy flies for albies this year and they didn't foul but the material can't really go anywhere. When I tie similar to these I usually get a good looking fly but it dosent fish very well / tangles too much. They do catch fish and I like tying them. Any tips on making them foul less? ( coming into the time when il be tying more. Still fishing trying to get as much in before it really gets cold.) still a few fish around.

  8. I tried to find the instructions for tying the wedding veil flies but the link on the scotf site dosent seem to be working. Looks like it will be a great pattern for my neck of the woods. Anybody have a step by step for this one?
  9. Thanks for the ideas.I'm still so new at it I get all excited when I catch a fish on something I tied. Think il try the rabbit strips next. Not as much time to tie flies this time of yr. I'm usually fishing if I have any time. But I really enjoy it.
  10. Hey . I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for tying a fly that will look and act like a rubber worm? I fish a pond up here near my house and I used to catch a lot of nice bass on clousers and other baitfish patterns. (There are baitfish in this lake that ball up on the surface and the lm will school up and attack them on top. Looks and sound like stripers busting on top) In this situation if you can get close enough while they are up on top you can fire a clouser in there , let it sink a little, strip back and usually get bit. But it dosent happen every night and lately I think the bass have been getting wise to my baitfish patterns. I used to catch a few every trip now i really have to work for them A friend of mine does great in there with his spinning rod and a texas rigged rubber worm.(At the times when they arent showing on top i mean) Short of just tying one onto the end of my tippet, what are some good worm type patterns to try ? Its hard to beat the good ol rubber worm but I would much prefer to catch them on my fly rod. Been doing a whole lot more freshwater fishing this yr. The striper fly fishing locally (Eastern CT) has really been lousy. averaging about 1 good trip for every 8 skunker trips. Would rather get a bend in the rod with smaller fish than put in all that time and effort for nothing
  11. Great looking flies . You sure do turn em out!
  12. Thanks for all the great replies! At least now I know it's not just me as far as waste factor goes. I will look for tails With finer looking hairs in the future.
  13. Hi guys. Just wondering what to look for when choosing a bucktail. I had bought a couple a few weeks ago and they looked ok to me. But it seems like the bucktail wants to flare when i tie on the hook. I using the top third of the bucktail like it was suggested to . I get a few good looking flies out of it but seems like a lot of waste . Any tips?
  14. Wow . Nice ties ! Time consuming I'm sure but those will get eaten .
