Recommended Posts

Nothing complicated, just east European way to tie ants:

Hooks : Demmon DGS Barbless #14-18

Thread: Uni 8/0 black

Body: Uni black 8/0 thread

Hackle: Black Hackle one or 2 turns

Just a simple thread body with some hackle guys, a bit of your preferred winging material for the dries...

They look like they're covered with something glossy. Epoxy? or what?

Nice bunch of ants. I like the winged ones, but they all look like mound dwellers.

how do you tie them Mike

If you're asking me ... I tie sinking ones pretty much the same way. My comment that they all look like mound dwellers meant the all look like ants, winged or not.

I like my ants to float, though, so I go with a variation of the McMurray.

These flies are easy to tie, just black thread, an anatomical hook, and one or two turns of black hackle like "Flytire " said. For coating - a drop of head cement. For wings I used a light, transparent super fine material called Zinc. Both flies float withouat any problem and catch a lot of fish ;)

best,

Lucian

To most of us, zinc is a grey metal. Apparently that's not what you used. Is your "zinc" an available fly tying material? If so, where?
