Working with stemmed Eyes

Recommended Posts

Any tier who has worked with stemmed eyes for bug, hair, or saltwater patterns knows that they can be a real hassle to get right. If you follow this little tip, it may simplify things for you!!

Securing stemmed eyes to the hook can be a real chore. If you butt them end to end, they stick out too far. If you try to tie them in just opposing, one will be further up shank than the other. Gluing them stem to stem just doesn't provide a strong enough bond, but here is a way to secure them strongly using wire sleeves used in leader making. Insert the stem of the eye into the sleeve, and dab a bit of five minute epoxy. Do the same with the other stem. Once the epoxy has cured, crimp the sleeve in the middle. The eyes are securely fastened by the epoxy and the crimp in the sleeve allows the eyes to ride low on the hook, and once secured, they stay in place. Tight Lines!
