Pattern Database Book?

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Hey all. Havent been around for some time, but now I seem to have the time to drop in this wonderful site. I have popped in from time to time to check out the pattern data base. Since I live and breath tying, I woke up this morning wondering why someone doesnt make a book of the patterns in the database? It wouldnt have to be a fancy hard cover. Maybe pick out a couple hundred patterns, put them in catagories such as dry's, streamers, salt water, etc. etc. etc. Take them to Kinkos or someplace like that, have them copied and bound. Take orders from the members on the site, fishing clubs, and such to cover the cost involved, shipping, and maybe a little extra for charity. You have to admitt, there is some fantastic talent here, and having their fly and recipe in book form would help expose not only their tying ability, but also their artistic ability. I know I would buy a few copies. Just a thought..........

Have a pattern book showcasing the talent on this site is something that has been in the back of my mind for awhile. The problem is printing cost, it is expensive for color printing. From what I have learned from people in the industry it can take 5 - 7 years to get a book published through an actual publisher.

One day.......

funny this was brought up, I was thinking the other week when I wan't able to get online that it would be nice if I could access the FPD offline, so I was gonna bring up that it would be cool to be able to download the program, then have it so whenever you bookmarked a pattern it would give you the option to download it into your own CPU onto the offline version. That way you wouldn' have any of the patterns you'd never tie taking up space on your hard drive.

No printing costs and it would be able to grow just like the FPD that is online yahoo.gif You could charge people for the download of the software to download paterns to, or my personal favorite, make it free devil.gif

That's not a bad idea. My area of programming expertise is not programs that run from your computer but I could defiently give it a shot. I know some people who write those type of programs so I may give them a buzz to see what I could come up with.

It wouldnt have to be a published book. Basically just print the patterns and take them someplace to have them copied and bound. Make it like a report with the black plastic spiral kind of thing. Cost per copy wouldnt be too bad I would imagine, depending on how many pages you did. I think the biggest expense might be for someone to sit down and print them out. Maybe get four patterns on a sheet of paper, front and back. Then you could sit at your tying desk and have a picture and brief description to go by. Would be easier than getting online, finding what you want, then printing it or memorizing it. I dont know what the legal ramifications could be, by putting someones name and a picture of a fly they did in a book, with no financial reward. Maybe check with each individual that get chosen and get their permission. Any lawyers on the site? I'm glad you guys liked the idea.
