Poppers tied thus far this winter

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. So I have been busy tying poppers this winter thus far. I am now up to thirty. It has been hard between work and school and I have managed to get some time at the bench. Where I fish, the smallmouth average between 6 and 12 inches so most of what I fish with is in sizes 10 or 12. Let me know what you all think. I have tried quite a number of different color combos. Also, I have been toying with the idea of entering the contest but I would like to know what you all think.

Dusk to dark, or stormy days, Oh and a dot of Glow in the dark on top where you can see it. It slays for me. I fish them for panfish, as I do not have many smallie opportunities, in Utah. Futz

Grizzlyking...I actually hand paint my poppers. So with that being said, I use a small brush. I also use Delta Ceramcoat paint. This paint can be found at places such as Walmart, AC Moore or Michaels. It is cheap and comes in a number of colors.

Great looking set of poppers. I'll look for the paint at Wally World.
Thanks for posting.

Real good looking group of poppers! thumbup.gif

I like the way you've tied in the rubber legs, that's also my preferred method. I used to thread it thru the body, but always seemed to booger them up too much. They don't foul around the hook as much either.

Great Job! cheers.gif

This is not meant to be negative, even though it sounds that way.
The files look good, BUT, rubber legs and other non bouyant materials can cause a fly to ride wrong in the water.
If you have not already tested the flies in the water, you might want to do so and ensure you are not creating a tail-heavy popper.
Also, if you are not supergluing or epoxying the doll eyes to the body you may find they will be bitten off.

Yeah I tried to thread them through the body a couple of times and just ended up ruining the body and poking myself in the hand or finger.
