floating fly that rides hook point up?

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Try a Hells Bay Popper, tied similar to Gartsides Gurgler except with a rattle tied on the top of the hook shank so it rides point up; or try some of a fellow fly fishing club members ties : http://www.lippedpopper.com/

Why not tie on a weed guard? If you tie a popper and shave the top flat instead of the bottom, more times than not it should ride hook put up. I fish weeds choked with crap and the weed guards have never failed me though.

I saw a post here about someone that tied one exactly like what Pelhament (what is you?) is talking about. Weighted lightly on top of the hook shank, shaved flat on top of the hook shank and shaped on the bottom, with deer tail covering the hook point to help be weedless. I can't find the post now, unfortunately, otherwise I'd post a link.

After you tie up some of those thoughts, take pictures & send it to Dougs' lipped popper website for the fly gallery! yahoo.gif

In the first edition of its fly pattern book, Umpqua Feather Merchants lists two such warmwater patterns, the Skipper Frog and the Dragon Moth. Both patterns are tied upsidedown with spun heads on bent shanks. I've not noticed this pattern sold in shops and have no personal experience.

Here's one I tied that I posted on another thread that worked perfectly on top of weed mats without ever getting hung up (when the page opens up, just scroll down until you see the pictures):

Out here on the West coast, the KDM Rat is popular in certain circles and some swear by it for fishing weed mats. Here's a link to pictures of it and tying instructions. (By the way, you can substitute epoxy for the lead sheeting on the bottom.)

LaFontaine's Dancing Caddis is tyed on a Swedish Dry Fly Hook, floats hook up, and can be skittered over moss and weeds. Its not a traditional bass fly, but there are plenty of caddis which live in bass water.

Here's a pattern I've been using for heavy weed cover. It does not get hung up and I like being able to pop it when I hit a pocket.

This is the one I was thinking of. I was incorrect about it being weighted (obviously).
