Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Anyone read the Fly Fishing article in Field and Stream called Window of Opportunity?

It should read Window of Opportunity to bend fishing Laws

This type of fishing is illegal in fly fishing only streams in many places so is it fly fishing?

It's a way for a guide to put money in his pocket. There is such a fuzzy gray line regarding what is and isn't "FLY FISHING" in most jurisdictions that it's almost pointless to argue. Stick to your personal convictions is all you can do.
If I was an "expert" people would be paying me to do this stuff. I just like to do what works.

This link doesn't take me to anything by that title... I tried searching the site, and could not find it either. What is it about?
The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home

it's a steelhead article about using long leaders, weight, and shooting-line on a fly rod.

The linked article has a different name then the field and stream article but its the same article. The one in field and stream was Window of Opportunity this linked one was renamed. I didnt notice.

This type of fishing snags alot of fish because it alows the leader with flys to swing Not my idea of fair fishing.

haha, i read that article in the print mag that randomly appeared on my doorstep. after i started swearing at it I had to explain myself (and the article) to the GF. as JS said, it's all about $$$. some places the techniques is legal and accepted, but for the most part it's frowned upon (by FFers) and in many places entirely illegal. regardless of your personal fishing ethics, i think it's irresponsible to print an article touting a technique that could get the angler in trouble with the law.

I see... and agreed. I have never seen anything quite like it before and didn't really read much of the article. I thought I was trying to find something else.

it doesn't look much different than a chuck and duck rig used for salmon
release a big one today and catch a trophy tomorrow

Some might argue it's no different at all, Paul. Same technique.

no one seams to complaign about using it on salmon not that I would or need to use it on chrome but hey to each his own everyone uses the technique they think will put the fly in front of the fishes mouth so whats the big deal if this guy uses a chuck and duck or you use a weighted fly and fish through a hole from down stream if its legal then don't fuss about it I personally use a weighted stonefly on the front with an egg or flesh fly on the rear and drift it on a dead drift through the pocket waters or in the head waters by gravel beds
release a big one today and catch a trophy tomorrow

1-there are many places where it is not legal in more than one way
2-it has a propensity for lining fish
3-its not fly fishing if you cant make a fly cast

aside from that, yes, to each their own

I dont care how people fish....to each there own.... just upset that Field and Stream made no mention of its legality in some places especially with new regs just coming out.

riffleriversteelheadslayer isn't there a big difference between a weighted fly and this system? With the article system the weight hits the bottom fast and stays there the flies drift down and then swing which from what I understand this has a high chance of snagging fish? Also there are weight limits for weighted flies so this seems like away around an over weighted fly to get the fly down

in Michigan they use the chuck and duck for salmon all the time which uses a weight up top and then a fly going below I have never heard of a weight limit on a fly before but I know you can put some heavy lead wire on a fly then add a splitshot on the leader to get it down if you want and if your using a weighted fly in front of an unweighted flyon a tandem rig your essentially doing the same thing because the weighted fly will tink along the bottom slowing it down as the unweighted fly will swing to the sides on the push of the current and there is always a chance of foul hooking a steelhead no matter what you are using hell I use to foul hook them on spawnbags you bring them in and release them no big deal don't tell me you have never foul hooked a steelhead if you have fished for them I have had them slam a stonefly nymph so hard it went through the gills and caught the fish on its fin it happens no matter what rig you are using
release a big one today and catch a trophy tomorrow

the problem i have with the article is not with using tandem flies or a lot of weight. to me, C&D is not fly fishing, but it still can be an ethical way to target fish that are willing to bite. what gets me is that the minimum distance between the weight and the final fly, according to his specs, is nearly 4.5'; it could be as long as 8 feet, not to mention the fact that the weight is free-running, meaning that the entire leader (from but to tippet) could be strung across the bottom. he specifically says that the "fly" needs to be 4-8" above the bottom, which is BS, if a fish sees an egg or nymph bouncing along the bottom and it *wants* it, it will take it. the whole setup seems designed to line fish by getting a lot of leader suspended just off the bottom.

Ontario Tributary regs in NY generally forbid tandem rigs and placing weight more than 4' from the fly, lure or bait. Fly and leader weight regulations are common in FFO areas.
