Foam Stonefly Nymph New Pattern Database Submission

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

the first set of legs is certainly too "high" on the fly and will be moved back on the next one. Just messing around with some larger foam patterns for drifting riffles for the smallies this spring. Still a Work In Progress. Trying to keep it a simpler pattern, but any suggestions are welcomed!

BDH, that one looks good too! I don't care much for the leg material. I tried something similar several years ago, and went to rubber legs instead. More movement in the rubber, and the stiff legs will sometimes hang grass & the bottom. Smallies liked the rubber better too!

Nice fly! Those would work great here in Colorado. I agree on the legs... not enough movement. I tie with broom bristles for show, with rubber to throw.
The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home

I like this pattern and the one in all black. I tie something similar to this, but with wire legs. I read the comment above about the amount of leg movement. I guess I need to try some rubber legs myself.

Thank you, Doug. My work load has increased exponentially in the last few weeks and I haven't been at the bench much, but I'm certainly going to tie a few with some rubber round for the smallies. The big smallies will be moving before much longer. Just waiting on the dogwood bloom. Was thinking that this pattern may be just obnoxious enough to turn a few Erie steelhead as well.

Thanks, Ian. It's still a Work In Progress, but it's coming along. Not feeling well today and have taken the day off from work. May get some tying in late tonight.
