Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Number of downloads: 49 I dunno.... does this look too dangerous to cast?
Its made out of balsa wood, and coated with a clear lacquer finish to help keep it from getting too waterlogged.

It's a nice piece of work, Rapala lures are carved balsa.

BUT, as has been mentioned, there's no way it could be considered a "fly"

Nice spinning lure though.
If I was an "expert" people would be paying me to do this stuff. I just like to do what works.

I stand corrected! Technically this is NOT a fly!
My question is... do you think it could cast like one?
It is much lighter than a rapela.

Could it be cast? Sure - with a broom stick of a rod, a helmet, and one hell of a duck on your part.

Great start on a plug, though.

Debarbing those hooks may come in handy when the inevitable happens.

Getting bonked on the back of my head by a fishing partner's errant cast of a #2 cork popper, smaller than your creation, brought stars to my eyes even with no hook penetration.

you can...I have cast 8 inch poppers stapered from 1/4 and 1/2 " basla stock for slim, lanky saltwater poppers....but the question begs...why would you want to cast it with a fly rod, creating potentially serious rick to yourself and / or others in the general vicinity, when you can cast it with a spinning rod and 6 to 8 lb test with greater accuracy and distance?
Hug your daughters, or someone else will.

I'll cast it on my eight weight any day. Wide loop though, no wind, and I'm taking off the treble hooks, and putting a single size 10 7x streamer hook on the back that's hackled as a stinger and debarbed.

It'll catch fish too.

But it still won't be a fly.
The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home

First of all great looking lure/fly smile.gif
I'm sure you could cast it just fine with 8wt rod.
I would change those trebs to a single hook.

Also guys don't forget about Sparkleminnow's Coffee Grinder.
I have couple of those and it basically the same thing just made out of foam.

agreed change the trebles to a single stinger hook in the back and maybe a smaller body so it is easy to cast!
