Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. yesterday morning at 3:25am Mrs. Oatka gave birth to our 5th child. Mother and baby are doing well. His name is Gavin, and this was quite a difficult name to come up with. As many of you know we like to have fishing names, and we tried a few and didn't like them, and almost gave up the whole idea....but, we finally agreed on Gavin....which according to the book of names the hospital let us borrow, means "white hawk." so, we just say hawks fish, and you can tie flies out of feathers (although, I'm pretty sure hawk feathers are illegal to use....that's another topic.)

Mom will hopefully go home soon, but because of a small complication she might need to be in the hospital until Thursday. But, besides feeling "out of it" she's doing well.

Here's a picture of Gavin:

Mom had gestational diabetes (diabetes only during pregnancy) and couldn't eat all the good junk food so many of us enjoy without thinking about it. So, her only requirement for visitors was they had to bring something she wasn't able to eat for the last few months. her mom brought these:

Yes, I pretty much just put that picture in because it shows my vise. I got a few size 20 flies tied yesterday. Might get a few more done today. I've been interested in tiny tiny flies for about a week, and that was reassured when I talked to a guy I met at Guys, Flies & Pies saturday that fishes some of the same water i do and he said he uses tiny size 20, 22, and smaller, and catches more fish than most people. So, i just kept my fly tying bag packed from GFP and brought it to the hospital. The lighting in the room sucks, an my back is killing me, but I might try more since mom and gavin are sleeping and daddy is bored.

My kids this morning when I told them their new brothers name were pretty excited.

Congrats to you and your wife! Get a rod into Gavin's hand as soon as possible. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Congrats to you all and welcome to the world Gavin! My first grandbaby comes in June and I am already finding all kinds of fishing stuff for her. I am soooo excited. Maybe one day she and Gavin can swap some flies.

Congratulations! That's awesome! Glad you thought to get in a little tying time while you were there. I know how your back feels, and what it's like to tie with poor lighting. My Super Bowl Party tying was just like that. I was still glad I did it. tongue.gif
My prayers for all to be well with your wife, and that she is able to go home soon.
God bless!

The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home

Thanks everyone. Mom is off the magnesium sulfate drip and is doing MUCH better. Gavin is doing great too! Still in the hospital, and might be until Thursday, but it's not so bad since both are doing well and mom is coming around.

I have my vise right here, if i could only get to tie a bit more. :-)
