Help

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Hey fellas what is the best way to introduce the wife to fly fishing, to better understand my obsession?

Thanx

Hire a professional to teach her unless you are an extremely patient person. By hiring a professional, she learns new stuff in a non-pressure environment. The professional will take time to show her stuff you will assume she knows (which she doesn't) which will make your time with her on the water easier on both of you.

That's excellent advice. We took a class together and it helped us both.

Rob is right! But make sure it is the right professional. When I first started out, I paid for lessons with someone that was of the opinion that we women have no business casting a fly rod. I have never run into that since but its out there. See if there is a woman's fly fishing group in your area. I belong to several and have learned sooo much from some great ladies over the years.

Hey guys good idea, but where we live there are no pros or fly shops. I am a pretty patient guy when it comes to teaching and fly fishing, but it's hard to get her to go, she dose not care to go bass fishing from a boat only because she gets to sun bathe...lol.. but I may try hiring someone when we go to the Smokey Mountains in a couple of months maybe she will listen to them! Thanx guys

My grandfather fly fished but I was so small at the time he had me use a small spinning rod. Have been fishing in some sort or other since then. In my 20's I finally took it up after begging hubby for all the equipment one Christmas. He was just learning himself and we both went to different instructors to save arguing. Now we enjoy the time alone on the river sooo much.

Seriously, if there are any ladies or even coed for fun groups in your area that is the way to go.

Thank you Cheri, but it looks like I am going to have to do it on my own, there's not allot of fly fishermen or women where I live so looks like I am going to bite the bullet and do it myself, should I introduce fishing or tying first?

I know of a ladies group in Ohio. Is that too far from you? Also if there is a Bass Pro in the area call them. They offer Women in the Outdoors classes, and usually will have a list of guides and casting instructors on a contractors list they will give you too.

My wife loved to fish as a kid, but had not been in years. When we met, I was fishing everyday. I was also dating several other women. As I grew fonder of her, she asked to go to the creek with me. I gave her a few refresher lessons with a spinning rod and we went to the creek. She jumped in , waded all day, and took several nice smallies on rooster tails while I busted 'em on the fly. At the end of the day, whe looked at me and said, "I want to do that". It was that day that I set my other love interests free. So, the lesson here, introduce her slowly to the overall beauty of the scenery and let her get involved with the experience on her own. Now, when it comes time to learn, like many have already said, HIRE A PRO! It is impossible to separate intimate and personal expereinces from the teaching experience and those experiences and feelings will effect the learning experience negatively. With Jamie, she was the exception, but she wanted...yearned...to learn to fly fish. Does she enjoy being out with you while you fish? If not, you may never have a wife who understands your passion. I've been there, too.
Hug your daughters, or someone else will.

You have one in a million Brother, yeah she likes to fish if the fish are biting, but only on a boat, I can't get her to wade with me, she is a litlle scared of the elements and Snakes...lol.. But maybe if I make a deal like "come fishing with me and you can get a new coach purse", that might work...lol

I found out from my wife just leave a fly rod in the boat that you don't use with a fly already tied on and if your wife is anything like mine she will pick it up and just try it on her own but whatever you do no matter if she is hitting the water with every back cast and every fake cast don't tell her she is doing it wrong because all she will do is toss the rod down and not pick it up just let her do it her way for a few times eventually she will ask you what she is doing wrong then give her a few pointers and let her go then if she decides to want to learn then hire someone And with any luck she will be just like my wife in this pic
