Clouser Minnow New Pattern Database Submission

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Nice! I like the color scheme on that!
The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home

Can't go wrong with chartreuse & white! Nice Tie! You might consider tying a few with some variation in the eye position & size. Maybe longer too for that size hook. Saltwater flies don't always have to be heavily weighted. I was just reading an article in a old Fly Tyer magazine about properly tying Clousers, and it reminded me of this. I tend to also tie mine too heavy at times & the eyes too far forward, and too short, but since I fish a lot of shallow water, they can be affective tied lighter & longer, depending on the species you're after.

Try smaller size eyes & move them back along the shank about another eye diameter or 2. They'll still ride hook point up, but will glide a bit more when retrieved, instead of a pronounced jigging action. Both can be productive when the situation requires.

I just purchased some eyes & will try to post a few pictures when I get time to tie up some Clousers! biggrin.gif

I'll post the info for the article too, in case anyone has the old issue & wants to read it.

Nice Blog you have there! Really good looking flies too!

The gliding thing is something few folks think about when tying Clousers. It is after all, still a streamer fly & the gliding is one of the things that often makes them very productive. Feather wing streamers most time have this type action. Think of it in comparison, as between a bucktail jig & a suspending jerk bait!

When you move the eyes back along the shank, during the fall of the fly, it's attitude tends to be more horizontal, like a real baitfish slowly descending. It can be a real killer when they're not interested in the jigging action heavier eyes induces.

I often forget too, and use eyes that are heavier than I really need, because I have them.

The article I was reading was in a Fly Tyer magazine, Spring 2001 issue. It was on page 16, "Mr. Clouser's Marvelous Minnows" written by Art Scheck, who knows a thing or two about fly tying. Real good article too. Clouser's book covers the same things, but the article just points them out.

There is likewise mention of the flash material extending past the bucktail (Whistler, flashtail style) & the over all length of the fly can be much longer than most of us tie for the size hook. I tie Smallmouth flies this way, but when tying saltwater flies I often tie them more like large jigs. I need to re-evaluate my tying sometimes. rolleyes.gif

Nice clouser!
