Foam slider/popper...the Slopper

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

I had been doing a lot of foam bodied poppers for this spring. I was bored Sunday evening, so I decided to alter the design a little and see if I could do a slider along the same lines. I punched out the foam discs, then instead of gluing them all together, I did 3 segments: 2 front discs, 3 middle, 2 rear. I cut down the middle 3 segment with scissors to be smaller diameter than the rear segment, and did the same with the front segment to make it smaller than the middle. From there, I did them the same way I made the poppers. Added eyes, used a Sharpie to make a dark back, glued it to the hook shank and epoxied over the body. Marabou and flashabou for the tail, Ice Chenille for the over wrap. I did 3 of them yesterday in different colors as test patterns, and took one down to the river by the house close to dark to test it. It dives just like a slider, but makes a little more surface commotion, I think. Slider+Popper=Slopper. biggrin.gif

Nice tie. Which hook did you use on it?

I buy the foam in a bulk pack from WalMart, it's a cheap craft foam, like 50 sheets for $4. I have a circular punch I use to punch out the discs that are the size I use for the #6 poppers and the 2 rear discs for these. From there I cut them down with scissors, glued them together, and epoxy coated them. Here's a sample of what the poppers look like on the same hook and hook size:

I also covered the foam with prismatic lure tape on a few:

Those are coo! thumbsup.gif
The great thing about catch & release is that the fish can live to grow even larger.
In fact, I've known some fish to grow quite a bit larger before the fisherman even returned home
