Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. A few of you already know I'm working on starting a business at this time, mainly selling flies and I'm looking for some advise on packaging flies to ship. The old standard Altoid tins aren't going to cut it for this and I'm going to need some kind of packaging commercially available. I've never had any flies shipped like this so I have no clue what's common and I don't want to go into a supplier without at least knowing a few options.

I know there are at least a few on here that either A) Have bought flies online/catalogs (gasp!) cool.gif or B ) Sold flies that you needed to mail on a regular basis. Any suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated!

Things are finally starting to get rolling and I'm getting a little more excited about it! banana.gif

Thanks again!!

I've had flies shipped to me (yes, I've actually purchased flies...) in the little plastic cases similar to what Mustad hooks come in. They come in various sizes, and have to be fairly inexpensive when purchased in bulk. I have no idea what they are called, or where to get them though.

This is the fancy version: http://globalflyfisher.com/reviews/gear/mustad/

i do know bulk flies that you buy from overseas many times come on these little paper cards packed into plastic bags. not exactly the best way to do so, but its cheap.

He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman.

Actually, your fly tying supplier should sell them. The plastic packs. You shouldn't need a huge quantity of them. But most sell them in a variety of sizes. They are the softer plastic (not rock hard like mustad, but softer like eagleclaw type packs where the plastic will not break).

I like to do things on the cheap, when I can. I use plastic cases that Rattle Trap hard plastic baits come in. If you have friends who are spin fishermen, chances are they will have lots of them. More spin fishing friends, more cases. You can put three or four of them in a small, 6x9, soft side mailing pouch. I use this quite often, but I will also use small, cardboard jewelry boxes. For really large orders that go up into the multiple dozens of larger flies I just buy a plastic Plano box. They are less than $5 each, will protect the flies, and the cost spread across the multiple dozens amounts to just a bit more added to shipping cost. I don't think it's too much for the customer to expect that the flies will have to be packed in something.

From another angle, Stamina tackle sells soft plastic cases in different sizes for crankbaits, but will work for streamers up to 11" long. A 4 1/8"x1 3/16"x1 1/8" container is $2.80 per 10.

I work in a machine shop and use the empty plastic containers that inserts come in. I've gotten differnt sizes that I use for myself. Maybe you know someone that can get ahold of some for you.
