A Half Dozen Poppers Black, Orange, and Olive

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Here are 6 poppers tied using Wapsi Perfect Popper bodies, #2 Mustad CK52S hooks, Puglisi Silky Fibers, Krystal Flash, with various
hackles and rubber legs.

The olive frog is my go to popper for bass. But I must confess to using Puglisi Baitfish when they aren't hitting poppers.

The painting on the Black popper is a somewhat simplified version of something posted earlier.

Here are a couple of standalone images of the orange one, the most recent design.

I'm thinking about calling this one The Great Pumpkin if it works. unsure.gif

It is definately a great pumpkin...whether it works or not. Beautiful work.
There is three times as much water on Earth as there is land. Any fool can see, God intended man to fish three times as much as he works.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Those are beautiful. Are you hand painting the eyes?

Beautiful Stippled! The bass are starting to turn on pretty good, those frogs ought to get worn out before long. If you find those orange ones don't get used, I'll be glad to take them for a ride around the pond for you.

Nice!,
Kirk
Every now and then, I'll make a video, wish I could find time to do more; here is the link:

I've got a few folders with photos of flies, these get more updates than my videos:

Yes. The eyes and everything else on the bodies is hand painted.

The eyes on these were applied with the ends of brass rods. I use
3/32", 1/8", 5/32", and 3/16". I also have a 1/4". But find it is too
big except for exceptionally large bodies where you are applying a
flat surface to a rounded body. For the rest of the painting, other than
for the base body colors, Yarn Darners, Tapestry, and other diameter
needles were used

I use the acrylic paint commonly sold for craft projects. The brands I use are
Delta Ceramcoat and Anita's All Purpose Acrylic. If a protective coating isn't
applied, the paint will rapidly come off when the popper is fished. For these
poppers I used a number of coats of Loon Hard Head. The other product I
often use is Devcon Two Ton Epoxy.

Ron, you continue to be an inspiration. Thank you for your willingness to share what you know (repeatedly) and for having such a helpful spirit. Due to your mentoring nature, I have improved the quality of my own poppers drastically. I can only hope that I'm as patient and eager to share my knowledge as you have been.

The poppers are absolutely stunning.

To paraphrase A.K. Best, you should get better at it after the first 100 dozen.
