At Last! Vacation!

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. At last! taking 2-3 weeks off from the madhouse, contact only possible by carrier pigion or chipmunk.
Doing a solo backpacking trip across Michigan from Oscoda on Lake Huron to Empire on Lake Michigan, about 235 miles. Following the Michigan Trail Riders Shore-to-Shore Trail thru the Huron National Forest and lots of state forest land. Got my pack weight down to less than 30 pounds, including water and food. My wife is meeting me (she promised) to re-supply at 3rd points.
I'm working with the Toledo Food Bank to raise awareness and funds. Should be a great trip, really looking forward to it after months of planning.
See ya'll later.

Sounds awesome! Please be sure you post a good after action report. I can barely hike to the mailbox with less than 30lbs of gear...
If I was an "expert" people would be paying me to do this stuff. I just like to do what works.

I filled up two shopping carts late last night
The one was full of fishing gear, the other newcastle ale
The checkout-lady laughed and said 'You think you got enough'
And I said 'Yeah, You're probably right', and filled another two carts up
Gonna catch all the fish, Gonna drink all the beer, Gonna head outta town, We're not staying here
Might take all day, might take all year, Till we catch all the fish, Till we drink all the beer

Im baaaack! biggrin.gif

Didn't go quite as planned, but wasn't a total wash-out, either. Made about 85 miles from Oscoda to the the Luzerne horse camp before these 62 yr old hips gave out. Thought it best to stop at that point before I needed a hip replacement. Thinking maybe that trip wasn't the smartest thing to try at this age. My wife met me at Luzerne, and we spent the next week at my brother's cabin near Baldwin. Much of that portion of the trail was much more sandy than I thought it would be, and there was a large group of horse riders that had been thru about a week before me. It was still churned up pretty good, kind of like walking down the beach with a pack on in some areas. Blew my mileage estimates all to hell. Hot and humid. I looked like one big ball of sweat walking down the trail.

However, really enjoyed the quiet and scenery. Did not see one person during the week on the trail. Did see a couple of fox, and plenty of deer. Worth the effort. Now back to the daily routine (and some decent food - ate mostly instant rice, instant mashed taters, etc).

Kind of dissapointed I couldn't do the whole thing, but don't feel too bad about 85 miles, either.

Congratulations on your accomplishment and you sould have absolutely nothing but pride in what you have done, 85 miles is quite a distance to walk and the fact that you did it at 62 is a feat to be very proud of. Your goal may have been set higher but what you accomplished sohuld not be minimized by any kind of disappointment since you have nithing to be disappointed for. Again I say great job and I admire and applaud you.

Exactly what I was just about to say after reading what you did old hat. Hell I'm 38 yrs old and I would of probably dropped dead at half that distance laugh.gif

I've been going up to the Oscoda area and fishing the Au Sable my entire life (have a cabin between Oscoda and Gleenie) so I know exactly what your talking about far as the hard sandy conditions to hike in. There's a reason the river is called "Au Sable" (Au Sable is an indiain word meaning "River Of Sand"). You should be proud of what you did.
