Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

I was out feeding hay to our goats Wednesday when I noticed this guy flying around. I got to see him nail the tarantula he drug out from under the hay pile. Only took him a second, the tarantula only had time to get his arms in the air and it was all over. He then proceeded to drag the tarantula across the yard so I ran and got the camera to take a few shots. He pulled the tarantula over 150 feet and carried it up an 18" wall before I left it alone to continue the circle of life.

To get an idea of the size of the Wasp and spider the picture where it is dragging the wasp across the hose the hose is bigger than 1" across and the picture of it on the cinder block there is about 6 to 61/2" of the cinder block showing

I have a friend in Nevada that has told me stories about tarantula hawks . He said you don't want to get stung by one ,but also you would probably have to force the issue to get stung as they have no interest in interacting with humans.Cool photos Robert . Thanks for posting them.

This year especially, I've seen probably 15-20 of them typically I only see 1-2 a year. Must have had a population explosion last year during the drought and all the rain is driving them up hill.
At least scorpions haven't been a major problem this year. (knock wood)

I'm really curious how the wasp knew the tarantula was under the hay bale it was a good 6" into the bale to where the sucker had set up shop and it was on the opposite end from where I was pulling hay from.

There's no way I could get the wife within 1000 mile of Texas if she saw that. We were at a mall where they had snakes and stuff and you could hold a tarantula if you wanted to. She ended up with a scorpion in her hand but wouldn't get near the tarantula. I offered her $100 to hold it but it was no go. Come to think of it I think she still went into my wallet and took the $100. ive_been_ripped.gif
