Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Michael Radencich's (sp?) book gives a step-by-step to make a regular J hook into a blind-eye salmon hook. After reading it over I decided that the price of store bought hooks are just fine no matter what they charge.

Have you tried Targus hooks? I haven't but I heard they are less costly.

Some drink at the fountain of knowledge. Others just gargle.

Other than suggesting cheaper hooks like Dai Rikki's or something about all I can offer is that it's all about the price of steel right now. We're on our way towards record sales at work right now but our profit increases aren't keeping up with the % of sales increase due in large part to the fact that places are hoarding steel and driving the prices up.

What kind of hooks are these?

$8.99 Canadian is $7.18 U.S. today. I pay between 4.40 and 5.15 for 25 Tiemco hooks, so it does not seem to out of line to me.

I have tried the Targus hooks, and they are fine. The only thing I am not crazy about is the finish. They look like they are nickle plated, which seems bright to me. I do not think the fish generally care. They are seven to eight dollars a 50 pack. Check them out at:

You might want to check Ebay. Sometimes there are pretty good deals on hooks available.

What brand and style are you talking about Vices?

I havent noticed the price go up that much around here(did a little about a year ago) but haveing worked in the steel industry for the last 7 years i know that ANYTHING steel is getting more expensive all the time. Alot of our competitors from japan have been paying big bucks for steel from alot of american companies and that in turn has driven all prices on steel products up.

Ebay prices are still decent on hooks but they seem higher than they use to be...GCO has good prices...a few of the other internet shops offer special prices when you buy a certian number so check those out.

Well a few weeks ago I picked up a pakage of 20 Talon Salmon fly hooks at my local fishing store for about $7.50 CDN. Here is the distrubuter (its canadian) http://www.superfly.ca/# If you go to the catalog it is on page 81. E-mail me if you can't open the catalog and I will send you the page.

Here is the hook. (please note that this is not the actual size)

I might do another group purchase before long to kick off the tying season. I would be game for another one if there was enough interest, this time we won't have to meet the $500 minimum order biggrin.gif

I can get a huge deal on dai rikis buying in bulk. REALLY drives the cost down well below mustads for a better quality hook IMHO. A good majority of my "traditional" steelhead flies are tied on dai rikis. Haven't had that much problem on my end nor customers who have used them. Now, my spey hooks of course are AJ hooks. I normally buy the heavy wire though, not the standard wire. I also prefer to buy them in 100 counts since it drives the price down a bit per hook.
