Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

I just got some new colors in prism tape, green and gold, and played with the new colors and some foam over the weekend. I usually tie these foam poppers for smallies and green bass on #6 long shanked streamer hooks, but tried these on #2 Mustad 3366's (I think that's right), a shorter shank Clouser-style hook. This kept the length about the same but gave the popper a better gap on the hook.

The tails are marabou and Flashabou, wrapped over the thread with ice chenille and threw in some rubber legs. This is my #1 bass producing topwater so far this year, in colors that don't look this good! biggrin.gif

Certainly something different. They look good. Is the foam in one piece or discs? Are you just wrapping the tape around it?

I use an old hair stacker tube as sort of a punch, punch out the foam discs, glue them together as the body, slit it length-ways and glue that to the shank. Then wrap with the prism tape, add eyes, color a back or whatever you want, then epoxy coat the body. These have been extremely durable and float like corks, the problem is time consumption. If I am making a few of these, I will usually make the bodies and epoxy them, let them sit overnight, then finish them the next day. Once the epoxy hardens enough that it stays in place, I can finish them at that point, but it's still a little tacky and that can cause problems if materials brush it. The bass have been hammering this popper this year.

Amazing poppers, great work. smile.gif

Very Nice!

The hook does look like a Mustad 3366... not an uncommon hook choice.

One of the great things about poppers is the latitude it permits the tier to go off in his own direction and
still catch fish.
