Nugget New Pattern Database Submission

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

If you have ever looked close, you will understand why tyers have been drawn to seal's fur dubbing for flies - great translucency. But being unable to get it here in the US, I have to say, Angora dubbing is a good second. The photo doesn't really do it justice. It is a little stiffer than other dubbings to work with, and I do cut up the fibers out of the package before using as they are quite long. But I think it is well worth it.

Enjoy.

Dustin - my understanding is that seals are one of those protected species here that we cannot import or harvest. If there is some for sale, I believe that it has been in the US since before the ban was put in place. I may be wrong, but I certainly haven't seen it anywhere myself. Maybe someone else with definite information on it. Not sure CITES applies as seal isn't a bird, but understood this was the case.

Deeky,

your right on about the Angora dub, it some great stuff to work with. Tried it on a couple wet fly patterns.

You may also be interested in Poul Jorgensen's Seal-Ex Dubbing & Arizona Simi-Seal Dubbing. An online shop called the BearLodge Angler carries it http://www.bearlodgeangler.com/synthetic_dub.htm.

they also have some really nice natural dubbing materials too.

Beautiful little fly deeky! The seal dubbing gives it a very classic look.

CITES covers EVERYTHING, not just birds.

Don't know about CITES status of the different seal species. I think it's more something along the lines of a "Marine Mammal" protection law but CITES could still apply.
If I was an "expert" people would be paying me to do this stuff. I just like to do what works.
