Dremel Poppers New Pattern Database Submission

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

Nice pencil popper! I've never tried it but someone on another board said he uses the construction pencil, pencil sharpner to taper his balsa pencil poppers.

I've read that as well, Kirk. Haven't tried it either. I would be concerned with the balsa blank splitting before it actually shaped. Wonder how frustrating it is to master the sharpener technique....something to think about messin' with....

Some time back I posted step-by-step instructions on how to make pencil poppers on another board. I was taught how by one of the masters himself, Charlie Cypert of Central Texas. Charlie, now retired. has made thousands of them for the Orvis stores in Dallas and Houston, and the now defunct Austin Angler, as well as others. Have done dozens myself. I can personally assure you that the pencil sharpener works great, and the electric version works better than the "Armstrong" models. Charlie had an 'industrial strength' electric sharpener that he used. I use my dad's old "Armstrong" model, that is at least 75 years old, with absolutely no problems. Charlie's were as highly prized by the saltwater bunch as the freshwater crowd.

Quick tip: Cut the bodies twice as long as desired for the finished body and sharpen both ends and then cut apart. Makes it easier to hold them while sharpening.

Very nice pencil popper... I especially like the taper.

One of the first fly tying classes I attended at my local club covered a variation on making pencil poppers. The person conducting the class recommended inserting and gluing thin strip of balsa into the slot after the hook was cemented set and then trimming the excess strip off and sanding smooth.

Do you do something to fill in the slot? Some do and some don't.

99% of the time I do fill the slot. I prefer Elmer's Woodfiller (easy to apply tube), but I when handy, I will mix epoxy and sawdust together and fill the flot. I have found that the woodfiller fills the slot much better and snads seamlessly. The epoxy sands well, but can "sag" and run out of the slot if the fly is not positioned just so. The wood filler allows me to "overload" and then sand to the shape I desire. Since I epoxy the whole thing when I'm done, the filler stays in place. I've never had the filler some out of a slot, which is kinda suprising since it easily dissolved with water.

Kinda rushed this fly playing around with the new bodies.
