I really like dubbing brushes for nymphs and wets and am also 'hooked' by some of the big streamer patterns being made with them. They are howevere costly and items as finished products and the color range is limited. They are not hard to make with the right tools. So I looked around and only found one rig that does both jobs.

I recently got one of the Cscades and it came w/o any directions. Yeah, I dont' need no stinking directions either but....

I am a bit confused over how the first connection is made on the tension arm opposite the actual spinning device. Ditto for the tie-off of the second section of the wire after you bring it back to that tension arm.

A small spool of stainless wire -- 13 gauge -- came with it and I assume that is good for the big streeamer work. But I would also like to use some of the colored wires for deep bodied contrasts too on wets and nymphs and am not sure which size wire to get for that job.

Any tips appreciated.

Rocco

Yeah, I think he should include some basic instructions on that. Check out his video here:

Basically, make about five or six wraps of wire around the hook on the left side. Stretch the wire across to the other hook, loop around and let the weight of the bobbin hold it taught while you load the dubbing across the wire. Then, stretch the wire back to the hook on the left making five or six wraps to secure, cut the wire and begin twisting.

Every now and then, I'll make a video, wish I could find time to do more; here is the link:

I've got a few folders with photos of flies, these get more updates than my videos:

Sorry that you are having problems and the video was not precise in showing the way the wire is attached.
You might want to look at the other video Dubbing Brush Take 2 the beggining footage is very clear.
As for using lighter wires, you can use either standard ribbing wire or the heaver Brassy wires.
Since these wires are A LOT lighter in guage you need to be carefull when twisting them.
Hope this helps.

I've found 34 gauge beading wire to be a good size for brushes, 34 gauge measures out about .007 of an inch thick. Medium Ultra wire measures .012 of an inch. Small Ultra wire measures .065 and for me would be perfect except it's to expensive to make a ton of brushes with (at least to me). Darice 34 gauge beading wire works out really nice and can be found much cheaper. http://www.google.co...ed=0CI0BEPMCMAI

Time for a brief testimonial.... I've been doing business with Pat Dunlop since the early eighties (and still use the same basic vise from him more than thirty years now. I've always found him to be a wealth of information and can actually make some of the braids and things I use to order.... He was Rogue River Anglers in the early years and Cascade/Crest now. Glad he's still around.

Go on to the big auction website. Get a spool of 36 ga enameled magnet wire. Wont tarnish. Can be had reasonable. 5-6000 ft for 40$ or so.
