Lately I have been looking into a Spey/swtich rod but being a 16 year old part time employee getting minimum wage my options are very few. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with these rods or reels ; even just with greys in general ( i know they are a UK company )... Im looking at either the 10'5 or 11' models, thanks everyone- Matt

I have used greys kit in various forms both sea coarse and fly here in UK. I've found there stuff to be good across most of the range. The GRXI stuff popular here in UK but the GS and GS2 range have good reviews and are cheaper I think. One of the biggest sellers here over the last couple of years has been Orvis Western 1 2 or 3(the 3 is the 2010 rod I think) rods for the guys fishing big open waters and needing a rod that can get a line out. They are same price as the greys. Don't know if you get shakespeare kit over there but thats normally good stuff at real low prices. Its not cheap tack dressed up to look like a bargain.

I have a 7' 3wt GRXi+ rod that I use for small streams...and it is a great rod for the price. Smooth action. I would recommend the Greys GRXi+ line of rods.

If you're looking for an out and out rod to start spey fishing with you would do worse than the Shakespeare Oracle Salmon rods. They have sold hundreds in the UK and I don't know about the 2011 blanks but the older range, pre2010 used a blank from a top supplier and have many many fans over here. I use there 14ft 11weight but they did smaller rods too.

Don't forget that you should tape the joints on the rod if your speying cause the forces on the rod in a spey cast often cause twisting and can pull the rod apart which is annoying.

I was lucky enough to take a few casts out the back of the store and it feels very nice ... also if anyone can suggest a line to pair that would be great , i just bought a couple cortland lines for my single handed rod and i have to say im a fan; ive also used RIO and ORVIS lines and liked them also thanks again - tightlines : matt

Don't know if they cost a lot more in the states but the Hardy Mach spey 55 had great reviews over here. The 55 head will be easier as a beginner and I've used the 65 head and its good. You won't go wrong with anything from Rio or Cortland in my opinion but remember a shorter head will be easier when you start out.
