Line Problems Twisting Lines

Dear FTF Member,

Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. I Bought an Orvis WOnderline and hardly ever used it then it started to twist up. I am not talking about memory coils it will spin up if you hold a loop downward. It just happens in about a 5-10 foot long section. I called Orvis they said to send it back they sent a new line to me it done the same thing. Next they replaced it now the 3rd one is doing the same. I haven't had this problem with other lines. I am getting ill about this happening and when they sent the last one they messed up and sent 2 instead one by UPS and one psot office. I told them they sent a return label for it. I believe I will call them and tell them i will sent them the twisted one and keep the new one. this is a real problem on the tailwaters where you make big casts and shooting line is a must, ever tried to shoot a loop throught the guides on a 4wt. They tried at first to blame it on my rod and reel. I was quick to inform her the rod and the reel the first line were one were Orvis products (still same rod though) the reel was replaced so wasn't it. They didn't mention it being a equipment thing anymore! If anyone out there can tell me what I doing wrong please help. These lines are doing this and are new. maybe 3 or 4 trips ont the water i just soap and water clean and don't put anything harsh on them so I am confused. THanks if anyone can help somebody out there on this site can. blink.gif

What kind of flies are you trying to cast?

What kind of leader are you using?

What type of line is it?(eg wf 5, WF 8 Bass bug taper)

Where in the line is the twist forming?(eg the 1st 5-10 ft)

Are you holding the line in loops in your hand? At times that has led to twisting for me.

I have had that problem a couple of times, I think it is because the line and core are not bonded together properly.

I get a twist when I fish from the same spot for a long time. I suspect it is from my cast which basically tosses the line from downstream to upstream without any back cast. Along with the drift, I am basically spiralling the line. Changing banks or locations seems to avoid a buildup of twist.

The twist happens near or within the rod guides. I just let some line out and let it untwist. BTW, the line is SA Mastery Series, Steelhead Taper.

I think fishyfranky nailed it. Try letting your line drift downstream for a while to straighten out the twist. Some people also get this problem from eliptical casting which puts a twist in the line every time you cast.
Be careful how you load the line on your spool too. You can iduce twist if you dont't come off of the spool the line was shipped in correctly.

Take the fly off the leader and play the line out in the current. That will allow the line to untwist. This is not uncommon, especially if you are doint a bit of mending for a clean float.

I unspool my fly line after everytime I fish and run it through a leader straightener. Then I keep it in large loose coils fastened with bread ties. I have had lines for several years now that are fine and straight as possible.

I don't know if your problem falls into line care but I'm just blabbering on.

I use orvis wonderline on my 4wt. and have not had any problems with it. However I typically dont cast very far with this setup, usually at most 35-40 ft. Ive only had it for a few months so maybe It just has not happend yet sad.gif

QUOTE (getholdofjoru @ Jan 3 2005, 12:09 PM)
I unspool my fly line after everytime I fish and run it through a leader straightener.

Seems like a lot of work. I've always keep lines on the reel. If they haven't been used in a while they do develop tight coils, especially on the standard arbor reels. Just stretching the line, holding the stretch a few seconds and slowly (keyword: SLOWLY) releasing it takes care of all the coils. This works on every line I have from 5 different manufacturers.

Also, be careful of those rubber leader straighteners. They can harm your leaders more than help. They build up WAY too much heat and can break down leader material. Try stretching the leaders much the same way mentioned above. The only difference is to slide the leader material through your hand as you gather the right length to stretch. The small amount of heat generated really resets and help straighten the material.

The line is an Orvis Wonderline WF 4wt Floating. I have been fishing the same spot. But why leave when the fish continue to rise! THe coils are about 20-30 feet from the tip. I think it may be a core seperation issue myself. I can't explain it though. My cast shouldn't be the issue I have other lines as well as a Wonerline 6wt and they have never done this. So what is the problem? Well thanks for the help guys I take great care of the line clean it with soap and water almost every trip to the river. I really need to call orvis back. That sounds like a project for tommorow. Thanks agian guys!
