New Flyline Reccomendations

Dear FTF Member,
Support FTF by Subscribing to Hatches Today! 2011 Issue - In Stock
Since 2003 FlyTyingForum.com has grown from a handful of people to 30,000 registered members and has become the largest fly tying community in the world. In 2007 I published the first issue of Hatches because I felt the FTF community could offer a printed magazine that far exceeds anything the fly tying world has ever seen published. To this day, Hatches is largely made up of articles submitted to me by FTF member and FTF will continue to play a large role in the future of Hatches. Hatches truly is a grassroots effort, unlike many of the other publications in circulation that have the backing of large media corporations. The future of both Hatches and FTF depends on the support of FTF members like you. For $7 a year, you not only help ensure that I have the resources needed to be able to offer you all of the features you enjoy today free of charge, you also get 96 pages of pure fly tying awesomeness that is worth the price by itself. Click Here for Subscription Info Thank You -Will

I recently got a new 6wt and figured it is time to change line on my reel as well. I will probably be using this set up for more bass fishing than trout but am trying to find one line that may be suitable for both. Does any one have any lines that they like better than another? Thanks!

biggrin.gif I was just getting ready to post this same question biggrin.gif Except my rod is a 6/7 with a 7 weight reel. I plan on using it for trout. smallmouth, largemouth bass, and bluegill.

Hey Marty

Congrats on the new rod smile.gif As far as a bass taper, you better ask some of the warm-water guys, but that rod should serve you well throwing streamers on a sinker or sink-tip. Get yourself an extra spool for the reel. I have a full sinker you can have real cheap in a 6. I can heare the Mo calling us now laugh.gif
I know where they live, I know what they eat. Now it's time to fool them with thread, feathers and roadkill.

Think about a heavier line like Rio Grande or Scientific Anglers GPX. They weigh about a half line size more in the head and will probably give the extra oomph you need for the buggier bass flies you'll be tossing.
You might also consider going with a true bass line. They are way heavy in the head and will turnover the bigger flies very well. When used for trout just go long and slinky on the leader.

The best deal going right now for my money is Hook & Hackle's Hi-floater line for $28 ($35, less 20%). It is Corland 444 line in a H&H box.

i would also recomend a rio grand it is an amazing casting line, i have two one on a 4 and one on a 6, It will cast anythng with out complaning from light drys to big sculpin patterns. if throwing really big, wind restiant flies then i would pick up a rio clouser its an absolute cannon with large flies. the new rio nymph line is supposed to be pretty sweet as well, its designed to turn over large hevey flies and dig indicators in adverse conditions. im a huge rio fan as you can probably see, there one short comeing is that they are not as durrable as other companies. that said rio tapers and therefore their casting abilities are second to none

I bought some new lines this fall, a Rio Clouser, an Airflo Field and Stream and a Rio Long Cast.
I still like my Triangle Taper.

Thanks for the help guys. Shoe, hang on to that sinking line, I'll gladly take it off your hands, I'm ordering a new spool today. Thanks!

I've purchased a Rio 6 wt lumalux, a Royal Wulff TT 5 wt, SWFTT 6wt and BTT 8 wt. I'm waiting for Feb to try most of them out. The 5 wt will have to wait until this summer.

Another vote for SA gpx taper. If your rod is a fast action 6/7 it will load better with the 7wt line no matter what brand you decide to buy. Sounds to me like you have way too much stick for trout and panfish though unsure.gif
