Deer Hair Drake SBS

A few changes to Michigan tyer Ralph Hannas 1960s creation; subbed moose body hair for pheasant tail on the back end and calftail for deer hair on the wing.

 

 

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10

thread - UTC 140 black

tail - moose body hair

ribbing - tying thread

body - deer hair

wing - calftail white

hackle - grizzly

 

Mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark

Clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of calftail; tie in/trim butts, cover with thread and wrap to bend

Clean, stack, measure (a little longer than the hook) a clump of moose body hair; tie in, wrap butts to wing butt junction, cover with thread

Clean, stack, measure (tips just past the bend) a clump of deer hair; trim to length, tie in, allowing hair to surround the shank

Spiral thread to bend; one tight wrap to flair the ends and return to tie-in
