Olive Flash soft hackle

tied by jbenenson
Fly Type: Nymphs,
Target Species: Trout,
Recommended Region: Southwest US,
Imitation: Caddis Flies,
Material List:
Thread: Gel-spun cream
Body: Goose biot, Callibaetis
Thorax: Hare-Tron, light olive
Hackle: CDC and midge flash

Tying Instructions: Start the thread, wind to the hook point, leaving a 4-inch tag
Attach and wind a goose biot, rough side out
Spin the thread counter-clockwise to tighten, then rib the biot (carefully)
Dub the thread, create a tight thorax, then half-hitch
Prepare a CDC and 3-4 strands of flash material using the Petitjean Magic Tool
Split the thread, insert hackle strands, adjust to 1.5 inches
Spin the bobbin counter-clockwise to tighten, then wind a few turns of hackle, stroking toward the rear to avoid trapping the fibers
Create a thread head, whip finish, apply head cement
Remove fly from vise and trim fibers to length as needed
Presentation Tips: The Petitjean Magic Tool is sold by Feather-Craft (and others). They have excellent photos showing the basic method.
