Super Yak

tied by Sean Juan
Fly Type: General Saltwater,
Target Species: Striped Bass,
Recommended Region: Northeast US,
Imitation: General Baitfish,
Material List: Hook - 2/0

Thread - Grey Orvis G

Tail - Polar Bear Superhair

Belly - White Superhair

Wing - Olive over Pink Yak hair

Topping - Peacock Herl

Flash - Angel hair and Polar Flash
Tying Instructions: Create a somewhat stiff tail of super hair with the thread about mid shank.

Advance thread to eye and tie in a belly of superhair - generally better to use a lighter color than the tail.

Add flash

Tie in the wing of yak hair. This should be sparce to give the baitfish an almost invisible guality.

Add flash - I like to use a color that is found in baitfish but not as a dominant color such as purple or blue.

Add the topping - the topping is important on this fly because it defines the profile. My way of thinking is that if you saw the outline of a fish with a clear middle you'd know it was a fish, the topping provides that outline.

Last step is to trim the hair to get the proper profile.
Presentation Tips: Strip or dead drift - this fly works best in clear water.
