Hook - Mustad Model 9672/Sizes 6 or 4
Bead - Gold or Brown Metal Bead Head
Weight - .020" lead free wire (Optional)/10 to 15 wraps
Thread - Black 6/0 UNI-Thread
Tail - Black Marabou (1.5X to 2.0X hook length)
Body - Medium New Age Chenille (Amberstone or Halloween) or a dull orange/pumpkin color
Hackle - Black or Grizzly Saddle Hackle
Head - Black thread coated with head cement
Tying Instructions: Tyed like a standard woolly bugger, in the order the materials are listed above. The materials listed above are my best attempt at matching the original "Altmar Special" color combination and pattern.
Presentation Tips: My friend VERN-O sent me this pattern in a PM message recently and I had to give it a try. VERN-O indicated that a few years back an older fly tyer buddy of his gave him a couple "Altmar Specials" (Altmar is the town where the Lower Fly Zone is located on the Salmon River in NY state). VERN-O listed the pattern as follows:
tail: black marabou tyed 1.5 - 2.0x hook shank
body: pumpkin or dull orange chennile
hackle: black or grizzly
VERN-O's friend said it was very very good on steelhead.
I also found it to be very effective on smallmouth bass.
