"X File" Super Easy Panfish fly
tied by JSzymczyk
Fly Type: General Freshwater,
Target Species: Panfish,
Recommended Region: Other,
your choice of hook, #10 or #12. I use a 1xl TDE "traditional nymph hook" (9671 equivalent)
1/8" bead, gold or silver
Ice Dub - favorites so far have been Peacock, Chartreuse, and Pearl.
Silicone or Rubber leg material to compliment or contrast body color, your choice.
Tying Instructions: Place bead on hook, start thread, and make a somewhat tapered body with Ice Dub. Bring thread back slightly behind bead, so you can tie in the legs at the "thorax" position.
Trap one piece of rubber leg on each side of the thorax, with a halfway-tight wrap of thread. Make another wrap and pull the thread tight, which will make it dig in to the dubbed body- this in turn will splay out the rubber legs, making an almost perfect "X" shape.
Place a small bit more dubbing on the thread, and make one or two wraps in the middle of the X, then a couple more wraps of dubbing in front of the X right behind the bead.
Whip finish, and done.
Presentation Tips: Cast near weeds, structure, or beds, let sink, then move with one-inch twitches. Should also work well for trout!
