Foam Caterpillar

tied by siestafred
Fly Type: Terrestrials & Midges,
Target Species: Trout,
Material List:
Hook: #8 Mustad 94831 Dry Fly
Thread: 6/0
Body: Green 2mm Foam
Legs: #18 Brown Saddle Hackle
Indicator: Orange Foam

Select colors that you think will be most suitable to your waters. I think a brown or gray/black body would work too.
Tying Instructions: Tie the first 4 segments on a needle, then transfer to the hook. It's a bit tricky to get the hackle tied in and wound at first. I tied it in on the needle after securing the first (tail) segment of the foam. Then I made the first body segment and then wrapped the hackle in the groove. I put a thread wrap on top of it to secure it, then moved on to the next segment and repeated the steps.
Snip the hackle after making 4 segments and secure with 2-3 hitches, then snip the thread and transfer the half-body to the hook. Tie on the thread and then the hackle again, and repeat the body forming up to the head.
I folded the front piece of foam back over the hook eye and tied it off after tying in the orange foam. Trim the head and/or the hackle to suit your taste.
