Montana Stone Nymph

tied by Old Hat
Fly Type: Weighted,
Target Species: Trout,
Recommended Region: Northwest US,
Imitation: Stone Flies,
Material List:
Hook: Tiemco 700 #8
Thread: Black uni-thread
Weight: lead or non lead wire
Tail: 2 slips of goose shoulder black
Rib: Micro tubing orange (original calls for d-rib)
Body: Black mohair yarn
Hackle: 1 natural grizzly and 1 brown grizzly hackle wrapped together followed by a light grey ostrich herl
Tying Instructions: Attach thread and mount a few wraps of the lead wire in the thorax area. Move to rear and match up two slips of goose shoulder to tie in at the bend of the hook about the length of the body or shorter. Tie in the ribbing. Move to the front of the thorax area and tie in the hackles extending over the hook eye in this order...ostrich, brown grizzly then natural grizzly one on top of the other. Move to the middle of the hook shank and tie in the mohair yarn leaving the thread in the middle of the shank. Wrap the mohair tightly making a tapered body and ending the wraps in the center...tie off in center. Wrap the ribbing upto thread and tie off in center. Grab the two grizzly hackles and wrap together back towards the center. One full wrap at the front...one wrap to get you to the back of the thorax...and one full wrap at the back of the thorax and tie off in center. Wrap the ostrich back following the hackles and tie off in the center. Work the thread back to the eye of the hook through the hackles to reinforce them and form a neat head.

As per the the fly's designer Charles Brook's...keep it messy.
Presentation Tips: Nymphing techniques. Dead drift, high stick etc.
