  2. Thank goodness the woolly bugger is ok! I was worried, what a lunker, how are your arms keeping up?
  3. Hey Will, What about having a rating system for the pattern but not the quality of fly. Its not a fashion show but a pattern system. If we look at it that way, then I think the rating system might be a good one. Like I think a royalwullf is a 5/5 but a mosquito a 3/5 Phil
  4. Ive said this a number of times, i fish a black bead head wolly bugger in a size 6 or 8 and thats about it.
  5. I use it for wings on salmon flies! I love black bear when it is not too fine nor too coarse. Phil
  6. Smokinprice im going to borrow that case of yours looks like you need me to take care of that for a while!!!! beautiful! Phil
  7. Welcome! Newfoundland here.... by the way nice shot there!
  8. I use a hook, 6/0 uni and deerhair Phil
  9. Smashing fly bob! I have to say that is the nicest fishing GH I have seen!I love the wing work on it! Care to divulge the hook info? Phil
  10. Ahh I see what you mean. This is what I do. Tie the fly up to the point of putting on the wing. Cut a clump of hair from the hide, making sure I do not grab too much. Measure the hair against the fly, so I know how long the wing should be. Trim the butt ends of the hairs to the point where I measured. Tie in the clump of pre-measured hair, wrapping a few wraps over the top of the fly and one behind, then some more on top. This way you can cover the entirety of the butts and have none in the eye. I hope that helps, Phil
  11. I have a lot, but I donate quite a few to others so im constantly tying but never growing
  12. Bud although Marc will have your back, ill send you a few flies and maybe you can show Marc a thing or two about the salmon Phil
  13. I just want to toss into the convo that there are so many sorts of tying that should be considered. I by no means am a master tier but I dont think I am a slouch of a tier. That said I tie trout and salmon flies and only mingle in the classics and always feel in over my head. I would be wary of anyone gloating about as a "master tier". Phil
  14. personally I do not wrap in a rib. I usually get a few fish off of a fly anyways and I have never had a problem with the hackle. I find the rib can add more weight, so if I do use a rib I use a piece of tying thread. My thing with the EHC is getting the wing the right length if on a small hook the wing is slightly long or short then the whole fly looks brutal.
  15. Rex no matter what you call it, it is still unmistakably beautiful. Phil
  16. what a sweet thought. My favorite vise is one that a special person gave me. It will always be my favorite one. phil
  17. Hey everyone, I have a number of spools of gossamer and a number of bobbins. The thing is they are all sized for normal spools of thread. I use the griffin bobbins and the gossamer is too small. Is there a particular bobbin I have to use? If so where do I find one? Thanks a lot, Phil
  18. I have 4 spools of UNI caenis (sp) 20 denier thread. The stuff breaks so much and even the weight of the bobbin can cause issues. I think it is rated 20/0.... cool stuff though. Once you get use to tying with it, it becomes enjoyable. Phil
  19. Old Hat, I think you are right the no hackle would make a nice shape with that fly. One of my all time favorite flies is simply a burgundy (wine) colored body with a flat gold rib. For a wing is simply white calf hair. Salmon flies with nothing other than a body and a wing fish really well.... who needs hackle!! A small throat of webby hen would be nice too! For collars and throats all I use are hen backs. Keep them coming Old Hat. I dont mean to suggest that my opinion is more meaningful than anothers, it is just my opinion. Phil
  20. You are right Old Hat, I find it awkward a little. Your tying skills are fantastic and that is not at question here, you are an awesome tier. But I think the body should have started farther back to give more room for the herl. Also the hackle is too sparse. A shorter webby feather would have made this look really nice. Phil
  21. Hey softhackler that is one wild fly! Do you solely fish soft hackle flies? Phil
  22. Thanks for the update Frank. I was planning on going until noon today. What an awful day out. I have had to miss my class because of the weather. Phil
  23. Wow Micke, That is one wicked fly. I love the body. It reminds me of the Norwegian flag, is that where you got your inspiration? Phil
  24. Hey there welcome! Im just across the pond in Newfoundland. There are plenty of by's from Atlantic Canada. Post some photos of your salmon flies. We are all learning here, it just happens that some have been learning for a long long time. Phil
