  1. Ty All:) Russ- the wings are just curved CDC with the inside of the curve face up- you can run the stems on the edge of tying scissors if need be- a side and front view of a similar pattern- and hope that helps. Will

Nice work John- I like #2 - the shadow banding makes me think it is trying to pretend it's a tiger:)) #4 is just plain and simply tremendously full of interest- the deer seems fully engrossed in being a deer )) I'd be tempted to clone out the "structure" in the BG - great image !!!!!!!. Interesting to see your thoughts on cropping. I set myself a limit of no more than 15% taken off the original file size quite some time ago- anymore cropping needed than that and it's in the trash pile. I agree it makes you work a little harder to get it right and explore other framing options/possibilities which IMHO is a good thing. I'm as guilty as the next of taking the first look- but it often pays off to push farther to sort out why I was atracted to the scene/subject in the first place . Will

Hi As John pointed out - I may have become fixated on water/plumbing-lol.- thought I'd test out another flash rig I've been building just for a break from the reno project- This rig attaches to my monopod via an arm and clamp rig with a diffused flash and reflector that can be positioned mostly any old way you want and stays hand-holdable- Will

  9. I'm in the absolutley does make a difference camp. When doing pattern/macro/closeup or my Nikon 300 f2.8+ Pn-11 extension tube on a tripod . I use mirror up and a remote release. I have tested ( visual assesment) 1- self timer/remote 2- remote alone 3- mirror up and remote 3 wins hands down. A cavaet to that is the tripod and head have to rock solid . I just purchased a Really Right Stuff BH-55 head and a Benro A357 tripod ( beautifull tripod btw:))). With my old tripod - a medium duty with a head I used to use for large format- Manfrotto 029/Bogen 3047, I could SEE!!!!!!!!! the vibration in the viewfinder after the shot with a big lens on it. The new rig is utterly rock solid. So a good tripod and head is paramount in the equation to get maximum benifit. IMHO Will

Yike Al- I looked at this recently when I still had my Deardorf 4x5 - basically there was one back available at 4x5 which was a scanning back not a sensor capture - http://www.betterlight.com/products4X5.html The more common option is a medium format sensor with an adaptor to allow its use on a 4x5 - depending on the size can easily be $ 20-50,000 US . Phase One and Leaf make backs. Biz must be good Al:)) Will
  11. I'll probally get flayed for this but:))- Photoshop is'nt the only or necessarily the best option available. There are a number of editing combos that work just as well. If you have spent any time in a darkroom then one worth looking at is Picture Window Pro, I use it as my default image editor apres Raw conversion. Extremely deep photography based ( noticed I underlined that:))) toolset ,very stable and very intuitive for a darkroom experienced photographer. While you could , it is weak if you have an interest in " photoshopping" images . $120.00 I think Add in a good raw convertor like Silkypix for another $120.00 and you have change to buy another lens. There are also free editing progs but many lack 16 bit capability, which is a real handicap in many instances. Will

Ty all- it does seem to be a very versatile setup- Troutnabout- the box was 120.00 CDN plus 40.00 CDN each for discs ( might not be needed/wanted for your own use) The box diss-assembles ( is that a word- ok it is now!!) into a 28"x28"x 1/2" package in a heavy cordura case, takes 2 minutes to setup - ( yep I wanted portabilty and ease of use in the field/my Toyota Sienna with the rear door up - plans are underfoot - you did'nt think all this playing around was'nt driven by an agenda did ya?)) Just have to finish up my Malaise Trap/ and two blacklight UVA traps, wait for the spring thaw and off we go:))) Will
  15. Hi Just picked up a new lightbox - Cameron Digital Photo Box 28" - 3 sides and top are translucent which means I can light from different angles . It's big enough that my 22" reflector discs can be hung inside to further work the light. Worth exploring IMHO if your looking for a commercial box A couple of first try images- and Will

  17. Al- I just wanted to say , that, I think this a tremendous idea. It provides a resource for editors , as well as promotes and encourages photographers at a very grass roots level. It is my belief that there are many excellent photographers, working with very local/regionally based fly fishing imagery, whose worth, both as expressions of the spirit of fly fishing and as photographs, is often underestimated . I have great respect for the more well known stock fly fishing photographers ,and the commitment and skill they bring to their work, at the same time , I think local knowledge/intimacy can often lead to images that others may simply miss . I hope folks take Al's offer as an opportunity, to possibly see some of their work published , and show the rest of us , what drives your passion for fly fishing , whatever form it may take. Will

  20. One more time with feeling - One of my favourite pattern styles - a hack of a Coachman in Japanese Tenkara style ( sorta)) Think I'm going to try and figure out how to do views from underneath/balanced backlit now, kinda the reverse of these ones. Umm er any suggestions. Will
  21. Ty Josh- The legs are pheasant tail barbs. I think I saw these on an Oliver Edwards Caddis pattern. You just slowly strip off three or four barbs against the grain and it lifts a little sliver of the quill with it ( the feet part in the image), then bed them against the cutting edge of your tying scissors.   24. Ty Vito and Al Al- the exif says f32 on a 105 mm lens - the fuller looking dof comes from the angle it is taken at , putting the dof more parralel to the width of the pattern. Here is a similar look using the dof a bit differently, I quite like this one myself- Vito - I've been playing around with different looks trying to find ones that satisfy me:). Glad you liked it.   25. Hi Russ To be honest it looks fine to me:) Helicon Focus is the Z-depth stacking software . You simply start at the front of the image plane and make successive exposures changing the focus further into the image. The number of images to stack depends on the DOF you are working with and the physical size of the object. The aim is to create a set of images where the focus will have some overlap from image to image in the stack. As I mentioned before it works well but usually requires a little clean up here and there, as the imaged size of the object changes as the focus is changed so there can be a little ghosting here and there, though the prog does well at scaling eveything in the composite. There are a couple of things to check when working in macro I found helpfull- 1- Manual Focus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/Mirror up and cable/remote release. 2- Is the Viewfinder properly adjusted. My cam has a diopter adjustment to focus the screen ( very very important) I also use a 2x right angled finder to magnify the screen. 3 - Use a High power led mini light like a Pelican to shine on the pattern when setting focus. They are high contrast lights and make critical focusing far more accurate. 4- f16 is pretty thin. f32 would be a lot more usefull. I try and aim for that with my flash units when doing those sideon type images. I use a 105mm. 5- Tie the pattern on an oversized hook:))) and get a bit back from a frame filling image and crop later if its for non print use. ( John explanation of why that helps is dead on) 6- Some colors/textures are a bear and require some less than standard lighting to avoid them coming out looking flat or clipped . I'm just trying to sort this out myself but it is an issue with things like rubber/ marabou and a few others where the colors are very uniform and often very saturated.
