  6. For me, the answer is none of the above. The key to my fly tying happiness is tying flies that look decent, fish as intended, and catch fish. -- Mike ditto or that they make the people happy that I tie them for
  7. Here is a link to another forum with a couple pics of a fish: http://www.novascotiafishing.com/forum/top...7966&page=1 Anyone know what type of fish this is? I posted this here because it was caught in the salt and in the entomolgy forum.

  9. Like BDH said you can use anything that your imagination can come up with. If you can try adding a rattle. You can also join to poppers together to make a jointed fly: http://www.flytyingforum.com/pattern3669.html Use magic heads on sliders to make them pop and splash on the surface or swim like crazy when pulled under, even on a sinking line the fly will float and can be twitched until the line draws it under: http://www.flytyingforum.com/pattern3627.html Here is a link to some cool foam flies: http://www.hafft.ca/deightonflies.htm
  10. Thats cool, and now to the bench for a hot dog fly
  11. I tied these for a freind who normaly uses spinning gear and wanted to give fly fishing a try. I got the patterns from a google search, and havent heard if he had any luck with them. He did tell me that he has had good luck with an all black dart, another guy tells me dark blue/white. I have only ever gone shad fishing 4 times in the last 15 years or so and never caught one. Its about a half hour drive to the good shad runs. With no transportation and a short shad season most of my fishing is done for brown trout. I can walk to the river I fish in a few minutes. Here is a picture of a bridge over the river I fish, the tan hose in the middle of the bridge is where I live, the window on the side is my tying room http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?act...mp;showid=10741 The colour combos of the flys are listed with materials, but I think the possibilities are endless, and have even heard a guy claim a lead head dart painted green all beat up with a plain hook out fished everbody one day. I have heard shad are the poor mans salmon and not feeding and the old saying of "bright day bright fly, dark day dark fly" might be the ticket

  13. The first thing I thought of was one of these, https://littleriveroutfitters.com/store/pro...1024&page=2 holding the tag end in between the teeth would help in tying a clinch knot for sure, as for other knots like surgeon loops it may also help.
