  1. I'm finished with 8 of 'em now. I posted some pics to the database. You can check them out - http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry270400
  2. This is my fly for the Wulff swap. It is my variation of the pattern in Bergman's Trout. I like the calf tail wing better than the moose body and I don't have furnace hackle but I like the black and gray a whole lot.
  3. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by sukhoidave: Black Wulff (Bailey)
  4. I have 6 of mine tied up. I am doing the Black Wulff as described int Bergman's Trout, with the variation of black and dark gray hackle and black calf tail wing. In the book it is labeled as Black Wulff (Bailey) I'm assuming that means as tied by the famous Dan Bailey of Dan Bailey's Fly Shop. Pattern Hook: Mustad 94831 Thread: 6/0 black orvis Tail: moose body hair Wing: black calf tail instead of moose body hair Body: pink floss Hackle: black and dark gray instead of furnace
  5. I like this idea. Melting glass... How do I do that? A blowtorch? Any suggestions about where to get the glass or what kind of glass to try? I'm thinking lightbulb glass??? Thanks!
  6. I'm sure that the flies are still being photographed. If you keep a close eye on the site you will see when it is announced. I'm looking forward to it also.
  7. The bobbin does come apart. It's actually 4 pieces. The arms are mounted by the gold nut at the spool end. The gold tube is welded to the tapered collar. That used to be press fit into the black body but is now epoxied. It would click as I tied and I couldn't deal with that.
  8. I have a really neat bobbin made by R. Pragliola in Italy. It really feels nice in the hand. I've had it so long and used it so much that the end of the tube is pretty worn. I'd like to add a ceramic tube to it. I'm wondering if its possible to "scavenge" one from a different bobbin and just glue it into this one. Anyone have any ideas?
  9. I think they are cool, they don't wig me out. It'd be fun to watch and care for them. Only one question - you say you are a collector and keeper of exotic insects but these are all arachnids, a separate class of arthropods from insects?
  10. Do you mean that you want to know good LL salmon patterns to tie up and use or do you want suggestions for a name for a new pattern? New pattern = Name of your favorite/home lake and smelt or ghost? Good ones for LL salmon 9-3 Green Beauty Black Ghost Supervisor Most of the classics - In fact that is my favorite combination in all of flyfishing - Landlocked salmon on classic streamers.
  11. I sent 3. The best was the one that I tried to get tied for last years contest but missed the deadline. I can't wait to see the all the pics.
  12. My main vise is a Thompson 360. I love it. I am not fond of rotary and the bent shaft shape. I use this because I decided to stay loyal to the Thompson brand after I had excellent service for my Model A vise. They sold me a pedestal base then gave me a shorter shaft for the vise for free when I discovered it was much too high when the clamp model shaft went in the pedestal base. They helped me with lots of changes and updates to the 360. Its too bad they are gone. Of course my vise is not true/in-line rotary but the only time I rotate it is to look at the far side of a fly. It has held all the hooks I've put in it reliably. I have all the available jaw sizes/styles. It's like a good friend at this point.
  13. As has been mentioned before you can tie these up any way you want. I am noticing that your flies have all the bucktail coming out from behind the eyes, I think. Clouser ties his with the bucktail on the shank side of the fly tied in before the eyes then up and over the eyes and open spiral wrapped behind the eyes. He then flips the hook upside down in the vise and then the hook point side bucktail is just tied in before the lead eyes. This ends up sort of giving the fly a tail and a wing. Here is one of my better efforts:
  14. I guess that is one kind of Jungle Fowl. I always thought that a Jungle Cock was just a male Jungle Fowl. I think that a "real" Jungle Cock looks similar to that bird, just different feathers. Did your friend send you that picture? Definately don't turn anything down, even if you only get a little bit of useable feathers, so what? If it does turn out to be "real" Jungle Cock, don't be too selfish! Good luck.
  15. I'm going to tie a Black Wulff, with a slight variation - perhaps I should just call it a Dark Wulff. Size 12
  16. Excellent tying, the wing is just perfect and the head is the right size. Keep up the good work.
  17. I want in on this. I'd like to do an original Wulff fly but I'm not sure which ones qualify. I guess I'd like to do a dark one, maybe the Black Wulff. I've seen a fly listed as a Wulff Grizzle (sic) which I also like. Is the Green Drake Wulff an original? Maybe that one. Count me in and if anyone can answer some of my questions I'll commit to a specific Wulff. Thanks - looking forward to it.
  18. I'd be in if it is for tying the right kind of fly for me. I don't do nymphs very much, and a few other types don't interest me but I love the idea. I also like the idea of prizes for 2nd and 3rd - but, I think for it to truly be a swap - test that everyone gets at least one of all the flies entered - otherwise it's not so much of a swap. I think it's also better to tie up larger sets of flies - more practice/perfection.
