  4. Thanks for all the good words. It would make it easier to trim each section of deer hair as I go. Have to remember that one.
  5. Thanks guys. Yeah, I confess that I cut off 3 legs during the process muttering as I went. Happens more often with rubber legs than I would like.lol
  6. Wow! Love that. Looks lethal.

  8. I was always wondering. There is always an emphasis on sharing your fly patterns in fly tying communities like this. It's great to see so many patterns that I haven't seen before. Are there any of you who have devised a secret fly pattern that you keep all to yourself? Something that you consider to be your ' secret weapon' which you haven't shared? Some in the past have gotten patents for fly designs and so on. Anyone here with a secret fly? I'm not incriminating you at all for it, as I have a secret weapon as well. Just curious....how many here.
  9. Awesome and buggy looking dubbing too.

  11. Just wondering how many of you find gills on a midge pattern necessary? Many pupae patterns have white gill material tied on. Even exagerated gills of some length like this pic. Do you find that gills on a pattern get you more strikes?
  12. I recently started using a simple setup for organizing my beads. A stiff piece of foam and some stiff wires with a twist on the end is all that's needed. After beading up the wires, punch them into the foam to secure it. When you need a bead, slip the wire out and take a bead off. Maybe others do this. Just thought I'd share.
  13. They do catch fish but have their good and bad days like everything else. I'm experimenting with different hooks. Down turned eyes will give it a more jig like movement in the water of course. Glow in the dark flies are another option as well. Hook gap that allows you to bait a fly with a small minnow or worm. I have small wooden boxes which I bought for 1$ a piece from Giant Tiger to put them in. I'll really have to figure out prices as I don't expect to make very much but something would be nice.
  14. Thanks you guys. The coneheads are anodized and light weight. Forget where i got them from? So it's not as heavy a fly as it looks.
  15. Regarding selling flies. I know for the lone tier, there isn't much to be made from selling flies. What do you think of selling ' walleye flies' for ice fishing. ' Looks like a fly, fishes like a jig' would be my motto. These are heavily weighted with lead wrap underbody and a tungsten head. Some have a wire wrapped over lead. They sink very fast. How much more would you charge for a fly like this for ice fishing? Could I get away with charging more? I'll try selling them next fall, about five or ten in a box. What do you think? Is it worth it?

  17. It's a good pattern if you don't mind using up some deer hair.
  18. Found it in some old receipts I had stored. It's a Partridge K5A heavy scud hook. Thanks for the input guys.
  19. No web site. I had it in my container of old fly hooks. I think I may have found it now. TMC 2457 ?
  20. Thanks guys. The red I put in front to simulate an injured prey item, or gills. I think it helps sometimes.

  22. For the life of me, I can't find what model of hook this is. Could anyone help me out here. Maybe it's an obvious make to some of you here but the pictures on the net selling hooks are kind of unclear. Is it a Mustad?
  23. Shot these today at a spillway at a lake near my city. The stickleback and a few other minnows were spawning by the thousands. Maybe these shots could be used to reference colors and so on for imitations. Here ya go.
  24. Recently, I ran out of lead wrap for the underbody of my flies. I came across some marked down lead core trolling line at a fishing store and wondered if it would work for adding some weight to my flies when needed. I bought a spool and tried it out. It turned out to be better than most lead wrap I have ever used. It is stronger than the standard stuff, soft, and wraps better without breaking very easily. Cut as 6 inch strip and work the end of the lead out of the nylon. Then just pinch the nylon covering below and slowly pull the lead core out. Comes out easily. So I now have 100 yards of the stuff. Won't need anymore for a long time.
  25. Just came across this article on an occurrence in Oregon around the Todd Lake area that took place in the past years. It's an interesting little read that shows how quickly people can damage a simple niche of a lake ecosystem. In this case, how quickly actual dragonfly numbers in a lake area can be depleted over such a short period of time by over harvesting. Dragon nymphs were being sold by the thousands for 12-18$ per dozen or so being collected from lakes there. Shame. Dragonfly report
