Have to remember spent wings were once uprights. Not sure the fish can measure them but I wouldn't change the length too much.

Most of the time right hand. I will use the left if the right is tied up holding something in place.
-
Same as most, clockwise except for some ribbing.

Going fishing this weekend and tied up a half a dozen. Look good hope they produce. go-n-fishn

What part of the Genesee are you going to fish? The upper end has some great hatches. March Browns and Hendricksons are good. Then the old stand by Adams and caddis flys are always good. Different sizes on the Adams and colors on the caddis. Tan and olive are always good. go-n-fishn

Sorry for the late post but just happen to think of this book. Caucci/Nastasi Instant Mayfly Identification Guide ( Its kind of a spin off of their book Hatches) They also run the Deleware River Club on the West Branch of the Deleware River. Great little book the only address I can find is: Al Caucci Ent. RD#1, Box 102 Tannersville, Pa. 18372

Here is one for ya!! I fish because I love to: because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly: because of all television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape: because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion: because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience: because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don't want to waist the trip: because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters: because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness: because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there: because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid: and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant---and not nearly so much fun. If the jaws are exploding like you say it sounds to me like they have a heat treat problem on their jaws. Poor quality control. They must be to brittle. go-n-fishn

You can do what I just did, read the manual. I was surprised what all I can do with my Toshiba. I have a Toshiba PDR-M25 and I knew it had all the functions I wanted to use but it was so long that I used them I forgot how. By the time I use them again I'll probably have to cary the manual with me.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I can save some money on that one anyway.

The secret is out, be using them for many years . Like you said the cheap ones are better than the expensive ones.
-
Just wondered if anyone has used that Thompson Cobra Vise. The design is kind of interesting and I just wondered how it worked.

Welcome aboard, I think you will find this is a great board.

Welcome aboard, don't tell me that big green fish ate the Brookie.

One other thing I invested in is a video or two or three or what ever, my case is full of them. The good thing about a video is you can stop it and go back as many times as it takes. Most of the good ones go over every step and shows you exactly the way it should be done. go-n-fishn

Make sure you 'r using a hook with a round bend. I tried to put beads on some streamer hooks that had a limerick bend on them and had a heck of a time. Finaly gave up on them and tied on round bend hooks.

Started out many years ago with a Thompson A and used it for many years. Then I made a few cam locks, then a rotary or two. ( I worked in a tool& die shop) But the last one I bought was a Regal stationary, to be honest with you I still use it as my #1 today. I can't see paying $200.00 to $600.00 for these new vises especialy when I know how their made.

From one new member to another one welcome aboard.

The best investment you can make is get into a fly tying class . You will get started out on the right track. A good one will teach you everything you need to know about hooks, materials, tools and methods. Plus its a good way to make these last months of winter go by faster.
