  1. Henry's Lake Pupa History from Fly Anglers Online This fly started out as the Andelle Dragon, which was an inspiration by the French dry-fly pattern called the Andelle. It is identical to the Henry's Lake Pupa except the body is green seals' fur. In mid-summer on Henry's Lake, a very large caddisfly emerges at twilight. During a day's fishing, the empty husks from these caddis can be seen all over the water. This pattern is designed to imitate the emerging caddis. hook- Mustad 94831 2xl dry fly, thread- pale orange, body- orange & brown seal mixed with gold rib, pupa bubble- wood duck flank, collar style, secured at rear to form tail, pushed to form bubble, hackle- partridge tied collar style, head- brown seal. -colors reflect October caddis Next fly an alevin pattern of your choice.
  2. I strongly agree looking at the expensive but once in a lifetime ferry hoping trips from WA to AK with a return via to Alaskan Highway or driving both ways. fishing is not the primary reason of planning but it is strongly on the agenda of activities.

Sounds like a great raid! you certainly looked the part, but I wouldn't have expected less.
  10. Steve I wish the best for you (tight lines and tight groups). Will and you have put together a place on the internet that I enjoy, and I can count on one hand the sites and blogs that I visit. Not one for social media or connectivity electronic or otherwise but I do feel a sense of friendship on this site that I don't get anywhere else. Please don't disappear from here or not at least until I get a few more rods šŸ˜. I have been here since 2009 and lurking a while prior to that, the site has changed some for the good and some I don't know. At times I feel (and know) we are not as active as the site used to be, the good-natured fun (ball busting) is gone but people today are thin skinned and get their feelings hurt and leave. Worse yet was the example of the classic site that turned from good natured to typical on-line harassment and attacks on tying style or ability. Asham because we lost a lot of great material in the archives and access to a lot of talent willing to help new tiers in that discipline. My hope is for new tiers and younger people to start getting involved in this hobby and sport but at 69 I feel like one of the younger dinosaurs. I do see younger people starting to experience things outdoors more vs virtual reality probably the only good thing to come from covid. Norm is a great choice to hand the reins. flytire is a very accomplished tier and very computer orientated additionally he is helpful to new members on the forum. BZ Norm and thank you for stepping up.

  12. Circus Peanut History from Fly Fishing the Sierra The Circus Peanut was designed by Russ Madden in the year 2000 when Russ was a 19 year old, working for Kelly Galloup at his fly shop, Troutsman Fly Shop, in Traverse, Michigan. Kelly was ecstatic about the pattern as he considered it one of the finest articulated streamer patterns he has used. The pattern came west, and was used on big waters like Wyoming's North Platte and Montana's Bighorn River. You can adapt the pattern using smaller hooks for our Sierran streams. The head of the fly was patterned after a woolly sculpin but weighted heads, using Lead Painted Eyes, became popular. The broad profile of the head will slow down the front half of the fly, allowing the back portion to catch up and show articulation. One of the features of this pattern that makes it unique is that it uses rubber legs, probably one of the first streamer patterns to incorporate rubberlegs. The original pattern had four sets of legs, two within each body section. That's a lot of legs! Later adaptations toned that down to two or three sets. This provided action as seen with nymphs but now utilized within a streamer. The original pattern had an Estaz body and did not use Schlappen (Chinese Saddles) palmered over the body but the Schlappen soon became popular for filling out the body. With the use of Schlappen, the body material shifted from Estaz to Crystal Chenille. Favorite colorations are Olive, Black, White, and Bright Green. Rear hook- Mustad 9672#8, thread - black, tail- black marabou with red flash, body- black estaz with black schlappen hackle, head- red/black rubber legs connector 40 lbs. braid with red bead front hook- Mustad 9672#6 with red dub bell eyes, thread- black overwing- black marabou, body- black estaz with red/black rubber legs behind head, head- black estaz next fly Nine-Three streamer

  15. Hogan Brown's Red Headed Stepchild History from The Fly Shop When Hogan was a young guide on the Lower Trinity River, he worked for a legendary guide that he would never dare fish in front of. While he learned a ton watching him and guiding behind, the bad news was the fish would not eat a Red Copper John during the mayfly hatches for Hogan like they would himā€¦ Kind of a first boat down the run type of fly the oleā€™copper juan was. So Hogan had to innovate and take elements of an attractor like the copper john, that he knew the fish wanted or liked, with a more accurate silhouette of the bugs they were eating ā€“ small baetis, and early PMD's, or small green drake nymphs. The name comes from one day when this fly was really throwing down behind his employer and he told Hogan that he was laying a beating on him like a red headed stepchildā€¦ done, name stuck. Hook- Mustad 3906B with red glass bead, thread- brown, tail- pheasant tail fibers, body- pheasant tail or brown thread with red wire rib, thorax- peacock herl with pearl mylar wing case, legs- red Krystal flash I ended up tying it on the larger side (14) to match the red bead size I have, normally tied in 14-20 additionally I added a little UV to the top of the wing case. Next fly up- Nation's Green Bodied Sedge

  21. Welcome back to therapy and the creative process of collecting and slowly disposing materials into rivers, ponds, and other bodies of water (wife's analogy). Hopeful this site and members can assist and support you in your addiction.
  22. CDewberry welcome to the site, I would look at Oasis Benches for ideas and starting dimensions but would tie for a little while to see what you want it to do. I am on my 3rd or 4th design change, and it is a somewhat continuing evolving design. My and desktop storage ideas are able to move between my home and travel trailer desks if it was home only my build would be different.
  23. šŸ‘very nice- peacock sword can be a PITA
