  1. I contacted vicrider but wanted to say to you all that I have really enjoyed swaps with you guys. I am going to have to step aside due to a financial situation requiring 2 jobs right now. I want to spend the free time I have, (too little) with my family. Could use your prayers. Hope to touch base occasionally, Trez
  2. Been struggling to get mine done. They are now, however and will get in the mail Today if possible or Monday. Sorry for the delay. They were rusty rats and a bit more complex than I thought. Had to do a lot of extras to get 12 I'm happy with. I kept forgetting the tail or....
  3. The white one is a flesh fly. Here in Oregon, with the Salmon and Steelhead spawn, it's a good pattern. The bead allows it to be used as an egg sac as well. The rabbit strip is "two tone cotton candy" put out by Hairline. It's tied like a Zonker. I saw it at a local fly shop, NW Fly fishing Outfitters and just had to tie some up.
  4. Essentially woven brassies, I call them a "sinker". Those were hot pink sinkers... I started tying them when I was trying to learn the weaving process and liked them, so I kept making them. "Crackaig" did a "How to" on the shuttle weave here... http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=79814&hl=%2Bwoven+%2Bflies These were my resulting flies. I just put a bead on before doing his training pattern. I did some similar for the Monthly swap club and added a peacock herl thorax, next month will be the soft hackle version..
  5. Mine went out in the mail yesterday. Black and white skunk tail fur with Crystal Flash and chartreuse thread.
  6. My flies are in the mail as well... Braided wire bead head nymph, I call the sinker, (hot pink).
  7. One I really liked and have read through more than once was, "Tying Flies The Paraloop Way" by Ian Moutter.
  8. I got my January flies. Looking forward to Feb!
  9. Only thing I'd add here is that taxidermists are not in the habit of working with illegal animals. They would loose their business license as well as the fines, prison, etc... They typically know the laws of their business. The likelihood of accidentally getting illegal animal parts from one is VERY slim.
  10. White water flies bought out "the fly tyer variant" http://www.whitewaterflies.com/The-Variant_ep_42-1.html
  11. I think these are the same thing dyed. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Whiting-Fluorescent-Green-Chartreuse-Laced-American-Hen-Saddle-Feather-Crafts/361201884577?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Dca2d55e0d97e48c38706af64b3546708%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D111582279794&rt=nc If so, I like and use them for soft hackle flies. Whiting black laced hen hackle...
  12. I guess I assumed that Orvis would be a real fly shop....
  13. If you have an Orvis store that close, that is definitely the place to get a look at and try out different vises and tools. Then you can pick them based on some experience and help from the guys there. If you want to shop around on prices, go out to your car while there and do a little recon on the cell phone... my 2 cents...
  14. Depending on where you are located, someone might be able to help with some hands on training as well. Sandy, OR here if your anywhere nearby...
  15. Mikechell, Give him a break. He was angry that his dog got into his stuff "again". I've had a dog that broke into or out of just about everything we used to keep him in or out. If he has a dog that won't obey him or tears things up and he wants to find it a new home, why not? Maybe he doesn't want to have a reason to get really angry with it (maybe loose his temper), in that case, it kinda seems like a good idea. He didn't say he did anything to the dog just that it needed to find a new home cause it's pissing him off. Don't play thought police... He didn't give us enough info to make any judgments.... I might owe you an apology too but I live in Oregon and the animal rights thing is getting out of hand here. It isn't uncommon for people here to assume the worst of people without giving them the benefit of the doubt. Then turn around and defend animals as if they can do no wrong. End of Rant...
  16. My January’s flies are on their way. I have wanted to tie the “Utah Killer Bug” for a while now but had a hard time finding the correct yarn to tie it with. Did some research and found that the Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift yarn was supposed to be the closest substitute for the original yarn used, (that is no longer available). I’ve had it on order for a while and it just showed up. I also have pink wire on order but it didn’t get here on time so these are tied with red since it is the closet I had on hand. I’ve heard a lot about this fly being simple but very effective. Tied with wire and yard, it’s a two material fly unless you count the hook and glue… Anyway, new for me. Thanks again for hosting!
  17. I've had this happen with hooks that had a sharper bend in them. With the bead fitting over the wire but not making it past the bend.
  18. Well, the recipes are mostly posted on this thread as requested. Mine was a hackle stacker/paraloop style dry emerger with brown dubbing, hackle fiber tail and orange hackle. As for pictures, for what ever reason, I can post pictures to other forums but have never been able to do it here, maybe one of the guys could do this for us. My fly hook: size 16 Allen N201 thread: Black 8/0 UNI tail: hackle fibers body: brown skeeter fuzz from fly tier's dungeon hackle: Orange tied Hackle stacker/paraloop style
  19. I didn't ask but they are very helpful if you give them a call.
  20. As with other chicken feathers, the hen feathers are best for wet fly hackle.
