I am quite impressed by some of your work areas. Steve, your area causes both inspiration and aspiration. I could also call it viagra! :lol2: I was tying on a card table in the dining room, but my wife reminded me I had an old computer desk in storage. She gave me permission to remain in the dining room, but I found a way to fit it in my gun/reloading room and still leave plenty of space to do all that I need to do. Plus, I knew that even though she gave me permission to stay in the dining room, that she really didn't want me in there. . Plus this way I can truly get away from everything and be in my element so to speak.

Well I had an idiotic moment and forgot to put the postal code on my package so my flies were returned to me. :wallbash: So rather than hold this swap up, I'll unfortunately have to bow out. That is unless you all are willing to wait the 2 weeks or so it should take for them to get to Horseshoes. "Shrimpy Scud"

I realize this is an older thread, but I have used my Dachshunds hair for creating buggy legs. They have no underfur to speak of so I use the the spikey hairs. I actually used my wifes hair last night and cut it to 1/2" lengths and blended it with some wing 'n flash to make a pretty nice looking scud. She is a redhead so it yields a nice shrimpy orange colored scud. She was impressed.

Some thing me and my daughter came up with

I think the 1st, 3rd, and 4th one would make pretty good ice jigs. I have been tying some up that are somewhat similar to those for the ice this year. -
For me, most of the adjustment comes from tilting the eye up or down to get the centerline rotation. I am still getting used to mine, but can't imagine putting dubbing on thread any other way now. On a side note, I hope to visit Norway someday as some of my ancestory is from there. I recently made to the Vesterheim for the first time if you are aware of it. Med vennlig hilsen!

Thanks for the heads up. I fish Backbone frequently. Next time I over that way I'll have to stop in.

Is that natural raffia or synthetic (swiss straw)? I have only used synthetic and color it with markers to suit the pattern. If it is synthetic, do you mind mentioning the process? I have clear/white, brown, and natural (tan)

Just an idea, but what about using a lice comb to remove the underfur and thereby leaving the guard hairs? I don't no if it would work or not but it might. This may not give you the exact answer you desire, but is somewhat relevant nonetheless. Muskrat Dubbing

Hobby Lobby has glass bead assortments for cheap. I can't remember what I bought mine for but it was cheap considering the quantity I got. I have yet to sort them by color but suffice it to say they will last me the rest of my life.

My prize showed up yesterday. Thanks again Horseshoes and all those that contributed to both the prizes and the contest. I was impressed with every fly I saw.
-
Mine will depart on Monday.

I also want to thank those that donated items to the prize list. If I can ever contribute in the same fashion down the road, it would be my pleasure.

Thanks for hosting this Horseshoes! Thanks to those that voted for my caddis larva. I was really confident on all my flies until I saw all the great looking flies that were submitted. Congrats to the other winners as well. It was fun.

Horseshoes, please let me know when mine arrive. I really hope they make it in time!!!!!!!!
-
I'm in. Mine has no name but it most likely will be the same as the one I just sent you for the 3-Tie.
-
I really hope mine make it in time. I didn't realize it could take up to two weeks. Mine went in the mail today which is 7 days from the deadline.

I don't do the facebook thing. Forums are as close to social networks as I get.

I think the fact that a large portion of commercial fly tyers use a Nor Vise says enough....
-
Another lefty I see. I soon will be a proud owner of a Nor-Vise.

I'm back off holiday so apologies for not replying sooner... It is great stuff... but hey I'm biased! Tho' I'm not sure where you got $140US for Bug-Bond from as the kit retails for £59.95GBP which equates to about $95US and if you chose to purchase the 21UVLED from the US... well the diy kit is significantly lower and probably the cheapest entry into light cured acrylic with the highest grade of material on the market... tack-free in 3.5 seconds. Flytyings first tack-free light cured material and one that has been tested for over 12 months! Hard heads I assume you are talking surf candies??? I entered the amount into googles convrsion and $140.00 US is what it told me. I wasn't referring to surf candies, but just a hard version that would be a good epoxy substitute.

I basically use a vise just like this, but on a pedestal. I bought it from a guy that was getting rid of all of his stuff. Soon, VERY soon I will be tying on one of these. Should be here Tuesday! :headbang:

I buy most of mine from retailers like bass pro and sportsmans. There is a mom and pop shop here that I go to from time to time. It doesn't get a lot of traffic and some of the stuff is pretty old. It is one of the only places I have ever seen french tinsel.

Along the same lines as what has been discussed, here in Iowa a guy found a dead bald eagle in the ditch and cut its talons off. DNR and whoever else was involved were very interested in finding this guy. I don't know what came of it, but were I him, those talons would have been back in a ditch if I were to catch wind of the DNR wanting to speak to me.

I use anything and everything I can get my hands on to tie with. I hunt so that is a source for me. I also work with a guy that raises multiple varieties of birds. I have been trying to get him to raise partridge and jungle cock for me. So far though he provides me with plenty in exchange for smoked trout and venison jerky. I am trying to get him to grow some birds for hackle since that is the most expensive thing that I use. I have dachshunds and plan on brushing them and using their fur as It would be awesome for dubbing on some buggy legs. I believe in the Orvis fly tying manual that Rosenbauer mentions someone using dryer lint for dubbing. I now have a bag of that. I imagine you could make your own custom colors depending on what you dry. It's a little more involved than a coffee grinder but should work. I saw a ground squirrel in the yard today and thought about the nice dubbing it would make. I also caught a shrew in a trap today and were I not so lazy and were it not a little weird I would get the clippers out and shave that booger for its fur! All in all it's about cutting costs and getting the most out of what is before you. Hell, I render the tallow off the deer I shoot to make soap. If I can use the deer I shot to get clean and catch some food, why not! I will follow a recipe if I want to match it exactly and have all the right materials on hand. Otherwise I substitute what is close.

Sometimes I have felt like a shoplifter in these places because I will wander around aimlessly for an hour or more looking for things that may work for what I am wanting to do. I know if I saw myself wandering around and going through the aisles multiple times without much in my basket, or nothing in my basket I would suspect something. I scored some swiss straw last time and some really cool metallic zig zag type tinsel in the halloween section that was copper, bronze, and gold. All three colors in the bag. I think this will be great for streamers and even ribbing. I also got a bag of UV mylar strips in pearl and green that are about 12" long that are wide enough to use for scud backs, wing cases, and will be great for tails on streamers. All were cheap, the markers are what did me in on this last trip.
