Never tie the Klinkhammer. Need tips
flyfishing99 replied to flyfishing99's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
OK, I went back to my desk and tied one on an Orvis scud hook. Is this any better or do I need to get "the real deal" hooks? And another -
Hi, I got some 200R Tiemco hooks and am trying to tie some Klinkhammers just to have around on my next trip. Would appreciate any helpful suggestions

Hi, I usually dub the abdomen of Sparkle Dun patterns. I received some stripped quills yesterday and thought I would give them a try. This is a size 16 PMD Sparkle dun tied on an Orvis "big eye" hook. Will this work? Thanks, Byron

Hi, I asked a fly shop to send me some hooks to tie Klinkhamer(sp?) flies. I received TMC 200R 3Xlong. Is this a suitable hook? It does not appear to have the correct shape? Thanks, Byron

Hans, Interesting! On my last fishing trip, I asked my buddy: "If you had only one adjective to describe a mayfly nymph (and it couldn't be "small", what word would you use?" He couldn't come up with just one word. I suggested "flat". Byron Haugh

Hans, Great fly and super video. Wish you would do more videos of your flies! Byron Haugh

Very nice flies!!!!

Or, would a Sparkle Dun be your choice for a PMD hatch?

In the original post I was talking generally about fishers, and primarily those who tie their own flies. It was not specifically about me. I maintain that " we", in general, tend to rely on patterns we have had personal uccess with. Personally, I often deviate from that. Particularly when I am on unfamiliar water. Then, I often try local patterns. If I have brought my tying gear, I will tie some of the locals if they seem to work well As an example, the PMD on the Henry's fork is Much lighter in color than those on the Frying Pan. If you regularly fish either stream and travel to the other, your "tried and true" pattern might not work as well I know a fellow who only uses a CDC swept wing for PMD's. Yet, the hatch somewhere else might be better served by using a sparkle dun pattern Know what I mean? I guess the point is that we should not limit ourselves to the pattern we may have developed a fondness for?

Well, I usually stop in at the closest fly shop to the river I might be fishing and ask what patterns they recommend. If the river is unfamiliar to me, and the fly is tied for the specific hatch I am experiencing there, I will give the local tie an honest try. For example, if the shop folks say there is a PMD hatch coming off and on their stream it is a different color than the "standard" colored PMD, I will certainly give their version a good shot as they want you to be successful - it's what would bring you back. Of course, when you get in the hatch, you will find out for yourself what color should be used. If they were correct, you would obviously use their pattern instead of your pre-tied ones which could be substantially different in color........ Right?

My post may have general application. However, I should have stated that I am specifically addressing fly fishing for trout during a specific hatch. That is to say when the fisher knows which insect the trout are rising for and must select his/her version of that fly to present to the rising trout. Byron

Hi, I posted the photo below on a different board. It related to a discussion of PMD patterns. The last contributor to that post brought up the point that we all "swear" by our own patterns and yet they are often quite different and yet designed for the same hatch on the stream. Now, I know there are some exceptions: Elk hair caddis, sparkle dun, etc. Yet, even there, you find many fishermen who reject the "standard" local patterns in favor of their pattern which they believe in. That, of course, is one of the reasons a pattern becomes one you believe in. If you believe in it and fish it, there is a greater chance you will be successful and that reinforces your belief in that pattern. Never mind that a different pattern may have been even MORE successful had you used it. Anyway, I find this perhaps to be more a study in human nature than insect nature? This is the fly that brought the comment that got me thinking: Thanks, Byron PS supposed to be a PMD cripple. Which raises another question: More pronounced ribbing as in the first photo or smother body as in the second photo?????? Some swear by one and others by the other......................... Smoother biot wrapped abdomen:

I think you would really enjoy any of Terry Helleckson's early books!!!! -
Hi, I got one of Jason Borger's weekly watercolors of flies. I thought others might enjoy it. It is called "Winter's Hope".

Really like all 5 of your flies!!! Super looking bodies on them. Byron

Very nice. Send me one of each.

Hi, I am going to try this version on the first PMD hatch I find this summer. It is a size 18. I promise to report back as to whether or not Mr/Mrs Trout believe in it. Thanks, Byron

Correct Color for your local PMD??
flyfishing99 replied to flyfishing99's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Thanks. What river(s)? -
Hi, I think this photo captures the actual color of this fly. Does it match or closely match the PMD's on your local waters? Please let me know where you fish a PMD hatch. Thanks, Byron Or is this a closer color:

Size 18 CDC and Deer Hair BWO Dun
flyfishing99 replied to flyfishing99's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
Thanks WaterGuy: Someone who knows the flies where I plan to go this summer suggested a darker colored PMD. So, I went back to the vise just now and tied this biot bodied size 18 PMD. There are color variations in the insects from stream to stream. -

Hi Rocky, I just use superfine dubbing. Thanks, Byron -
Hi, Going to be fishing the Frying Pan this summer and tying some smaller Blue Wing Olives for the trip. This one is a size 18. I don't go much smaller than that. Never seem to get refusals for being too big...

Jim, I have a lot of vises, so have used many over the years. Renzetti does make quality vises. Personally, I like the Presentation 4000. I mostly tie small flies and really like the screw type jaws on the 4000. But, I think any of their vises would be good.' Byron
