  1. Hey Bruce I heard things on Elk were rough before the rain... and its been blown ever since. Looks like your decison to move watersheds paid off
  2. Completely disagree with that I do think there are a bunch of garbage switch rods out there that are just a 10'rod with a lower handle also, up until the last year or so, there were no good line choices... personally i still think there are a buch of poor lines But the switch was built to "switch" between single and 2 handed spey casts and can be super effective tools I have a Beulah Platinum 10'4 6wt switch I built a 15' skagit head to pair with 10' tips it is a killer rig and has been able to hit the far bank/far side of any run I fish and will throw the big flies I like to fish a single hander will work.. but not optimal for effectively covering water false casting = less time fishing most single hand lines are actually the exact opposite of what you want from a line for spey casting
  3. "playing at the shop" wont do you much wiggling a rod and looking at the cork will not translate into any good information the most important thing is to not half-ass it know that this will require a new/dedicated rod, reel, and line line being maybe the most important part learning with the incorrect tools will compound problems and easily discourage you do you plan on just swinging flies? or also nymphing? spey casting? or mixing in overhead and roll casts? knowing the water you will look to fish... 2hander - 12'6 is plently long enough - 6wt - Skagit or scandi line switch - 10'6 - 6wt or 7wt - skagit short or scandi short line... OR speydicator if you want to nymph as well Honesly, get a switch and fish it like a short 2hander in the summer you can throw overhead casts on larger water with some practice you can cover all the water nearby with a switch... a full rod will be too much for some water

Hey... sorry i just saw this the Meck books is good... there are are few others... if you goto a local book store, there will be a good collection I know the fly shop is a bit of a hike across town... but they have a few as well Here are 2 more from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Trout-Streams-Pennsylvania-Anglers-Edition/dp/1879475022 http://www.amazon.com/Flyfishers-Guide-Pennsylvania-Guides/dp/1932098518/ref=pd_sim_b_1 I find most of the book articles on Western PA to be out of date and a bit generous in their descriptions... or maybe i have old versions... just my opinion For you, going east, north, or south will give you the best options... not much in terme of trout west of you everything is pretty much done now you can still fish dries on mtn streams... but this will not be during "Hatches" the limestoners will fish midges through the winter March/April will be when the major stuff starts back up
  10. there are a few threads on here with flies Skip the rabbit strips... they hold water = more difficult to cast that link is a great blog for flies notice that most are fur (usually bucktail) tied in reverse... this allows for profile without holding water it also adds great support for the longer/softer materials (flash and feathers)

  15. here is some contructive conversation... XXXXX tenkadarradda USA the flies are shitty the tech is a gimmic and the guy spearheading it is a douchebag and tried to build a name off attacking an out of context comment form LK and TFO its a bunch of fruitloops drinking tea and being pretentious
  16. for any popper material... lay a thread base on the shank cover in zapagap place the popper paint/decorate/ throw on some eyes... whatever then use Clear Cure Goo to cover the head you are able to use small workable amounts and then cure it (curing takes 5 sec) add another small amount... and cure there is NO waste and SUPER easy to work with I use the brushable Goos thin for larger applications Hydro for smaller applications or touch ups after the thin Here is a cut and painted foam head this is the softer closed cell foam... floats like a cork, but the softness will cause for poor hooking the goo allows for a hard surface... with no loss of floatability
