  1. My experience with salmon on a fly are that salmon are predatory. They have a tendency to attack anything that gets in their face. I have caught them on a purple or black egg sucking leaches. My advice would be to go to the stream and try some standard patterns.

Thanks rstrout, I'll put together a few different colors and styles of the classic egg sucking leach and see how that works.

  2. I have never tried to catch salmon on the fly. However, I have found a spot that I would like to try. I am in Michigan's UP and the salmon are starting to run up the trout streams from the bigger water. The spot I go you can catch them on spinning gear using little cleos or mepps. Blue and chrome or red and brass colored have been the leaders in color so far. Any tips on patterns to try that might produce results? I plan on using my 8 wt.

    Thanks!

  3. KayT ... I like those flies. I am with agn, that fire tiger pattern should be a killer.

I do have a question about streamers, though. I am just starting to look into tying some, and I have a problem. The water I usually fish is weedy and worst. filled with laydowns and stumps at best. Rarely am I fishing open water.

Has any one tied streamers to swim hook up? I've tied a few "carp flies" so named because I first saw them on a carp fishing thread. The hair tuft is tied to cover the hook point and make the lure fall to the bottom hook point up. I am thinking of tying streamer patterns to do the same thing. Tie all the fur and flash with the hook in the vise point up.

I am pretty sure I am not thinking of anything new or innovative, so ... what problem am I getting ready to cause for myself?

  4. Hi Dave- looks pretty good for first attempts..much better than mine did. Quite a few of us on here from Michigan... as for patterns to tie, what will you be fishing and where at? Rivers, streams, lakes, ponds? Not specific locations just the types of waters...

  5. I just picked up my new fly rod from Steve today and does this thing look great. It was my first custom rod and he exceeded my expectations by far! I highly recommend him if anyone is looking around for a new rod. Here are a couple pictures of "The Brookie and Bluegill Slayer" taking it's first victims...it is a 6'-6" 2 wt and is a blast to fish! Thanks again Steve, looks great and I couldn't be happier with it.

  6. Look pretty good for a first attempt. Couple things I would say... I try to keep the tail the length of the shank of the hook, Keep your wraps closer together when wrapping around the post, Could probably do with a couple more wraps too (although if you had used brown and grizzly this would help in the more wraps), and I would trim the post down a little bit more but you will catch fish the way you have them. Nice job!

  7. one set of flies (I forget who) will have a double in it (selected randomly). One of the swappers only sent in a dozen flies and not 15... With the one swappers extras and the fly for myself it came out to being only 14 so one set of flies received a random extra fly. Everyone who sent in their 15 flies got 15 back though. And the one who sent in a dozen got a dozen back to keep it fair. They will be out in the morning and on their ways back to you all. Thanks again for a fun swap.

  8. I can't wait to see these flies. I am in the middle of a big tying project right now in preparation for my U.P. pike trip this summer. These flies are going to be great additions to my box.

Where about in the U.P.? I am up here for school at Tech... had some fun pulling the northerns through the ice this winter and excited to try for some this summer on the fly.

  9. Has anyone heard from Bluegill? He said he was to send his flies out last Monday (March 19) but I still haven't received them or been able to reach him... I will wait until this Friday and if they still aren't here then I will send everything out. Sorry for the delay.

  10. Thanks for this link. As silly as this sounds...after 2.5 years I still had a hard time with egg patterns... after about a dozen attempts with the straw method I am actually putting them in my fly box instead of cutting them down to try again.
