  1. Have been waiting for some antron material to arrive so I could complete a couple of caddis nymphs. I've named them Sonoma Creek caddis after the area where New Zealand's steelhead rainbows originated. The dark thorax dub is very finely combed merino wool mix, the white body has been done shark style and I enjoyed tying these ones. cheers
  2. tied 4 caddis patterns sofar with new materials. Lets see how they go
  3. Bonjour Pierre, bienvenue au forum Brian Australie et Nouvelle Zelande le sud pacifique
  4. thanks Joe, there's only one feather than I use mostly and that's the partridge for the hares ear spider and it's variants. I'll post some pics of the caddis's, natural and radical in due course. cheers Brian
  5. Hi JRG, I found some fine tubing, also some larva lace at a local (and rare) flyfishing shop - they both work well, not as stretchy as the Ice stretch lace but good enough. I've found that using coloured thread under clear tube is one way of getting around the lack of coloured lace. Tied some interesting and radical caddis's sofar. Just waiting for some hooks and then I'll start on the natural-looking net-building caddis based on Hans Stephensons version. Nice way to pass the winter. cheers Brian
  6. Great pics, I tie the shark caddis, this first picture in your post. If you really spin/twist antron tightly you get that result, segments without a wire rib. If you look closely at the picture you will see that there is a real nymph among the ties. Its one of the simplest realist tie I do. Lanning I also like the shark caddis larva. It´s easy to tie and very succesful Regards Stefan Hi Stefan, I'll be having a go at the shark. Thanks everyone for your input - I'm slowly getting it sorted. cheers Brian
  7. I like Perth, spent some time there few years back - good saltwater fishing and the beer's drinkable. Will still commute over to NZ for the winter run of Taupo rainbows - some would call a #10 weight overkill but they haven't been punching line into a howling in-your-face gale as it does sometimes. I also take a #6 for the quiet places and small pools. There is plenty to offer here in Oz, it's a pity I'm not living down in northern Victoria because there's some great streams down there, also around Jindabyne and Thredbo in NSW. I guess you have your hands full with the steelheads over there. cheers Brian

I haven't tried antron yet. I managed to get some jelly cord aka stretch beading cord today and will try a model with the cord wound around the shank. Instead of an external rib I'm going to try a gold wire rib around the hook shank and then wind the cord over the top - the rib should show thru the transparency of the material. I'm interested in the colour purple for it's wavelength in deeper water and I got some jelly cord in that colour to try out. Some say that bright yellow is a good attractor but I would think that in deeper water it would simply look white (H. Parumbripennis) regards Brian
  9. gidday. I've checked out lil' daves website and seen the pics. I'm sure I could hook a barra as they lay up in the shallow bays, the problem is what do I do with a metre long fish once hooked !. I have a 10 weight rod which is stiff enough to hold a double figure trout, but a barra? - it would be a waterskiing event I kin tell ya. Worse still if I only had my lovely Fenwick #6. I've bookmarked the NQ site and will follow it - pity they're not down here on the sunshine coast. Where was your home town in Oz and did you fish Victoria or Snowy river ? regards Brian
  10. wow what a collection ! I'm like a kid set free in a candy shop, thanks enormously Brian
  11. ahhhh I like this one as I tie gurglers for smallmouth bass. cheers BrianM
  12. Hi flytire I have tied them on Gamakatsu Drop Shot and Octopus hooks from 6 to 10 - the Drop Shot seems to have the better curve for a caddis/scud. The photo example is an earlier model tied on a Mustad 10. I would say that jelly cord is what I'm looking for - latex gloves are easy to obtain - thanks for that info. Pattern is fine without segments - more for the fisherman than the fish methinks, as when it is ripping down a fast river, the trout doesn't have time to examine and count the segments. I'll see if I can get some jelly cord and post another pic. I'm not giving up my Hares ear spider version - it's still the best fish catcher I have - for the rainbows I just add a bit of sparkle. Thanks for your input and info Brian
  13. Hi Reactionhit - thanks for the welcome. The Aussie fishing is pretty new to me - I'm a bit isolated here in the fresh water scene - the flyfishing is pretty much all saltwater and I haven't seen another flyrod on any of the lakes or dams sofar. I did have a go on a local dam (Ewan Maddock) in amongst the lilypads, with a cicada imitation, looking for a Saratoga - like the Barramundi their eyes are at the top looking for surface food. I had to be careful on the edges of the dam, some of the most venomous snakes in the world frequent this area! A boat would be good. Further up north at a place called the Awoonga dam, the Barramundi grow up to and over a metre long and they will take the fly apparently - like a large woolly bugger on a floating line. That kind of fishing is in my long-term plans. There are plenty of lakes and dams within 30-40kms. It's winter here and things are pretty quiet so I'm tying flies, experimenting with new patterns and updating some fishing gear. cheers
  14. How about a photo? Thanks best I can do at the moment - gives you an indication of the shape - this is an earlier model. Brian
  15. How about a photo? Thanks when I can get a friend to take a macro for me Brian
