  1. Same model & flower arrangement and a bounce card made from the craft foam. Used the 50mm f1.8 lens, flash synced to 1/200s, f5.6 apeture priority mode. Cropped to this Converted to Black & White Used Sharpening and B/W conversion Actions from Russel Browns Site
  2. I cut a card out of the craft foam and played with it tonight. I haven't downloaded them yet. I can't seem to have much luck with any of the camera modes except AV and flash sync to 1/200th (fixed). I am playing around the 18-55mm kit lens and the 50mm 1.8II nifty fifty as it is sometimes called. Any ideas anyone? The model is Pippy. She works for nothing. Thanks everyone for the comments.
  3. I've had a Canon 430EX speed lite since late summer but haven't spent much time learning how to use it. So in anticipation of a family gathering Christmas Eve, decided to try a bounce card similar to something presented at this web site. A Better Bounce Card These two pics are result of last nights experiments uing a 3x5 card. I got a sheet of craft foam like he uses for his cards at Hobby Lobby today so I can experiment with the card height easier and control the amount of light that goes forward. I like what I'm seeing so far.
  4. I wanted to try out doing a B/W conversion. Wild Flower Before Wild Flower After
  5. Right you are. I'm not sure if it would be possible for it to be a shadow.
  6. This is a good link to some astrophotos by Jerry Lodriguss Catching The Light In his Show Case Gallery he has an image showing the shadow of the Space Station on the surface of the sun with an explanation of how he took the image. The image also appears in the Nov. issue of Sky & Telescope. This link is to a depth of field calculator. It has a free download for the calculator. Might be useful for macros. Depth of Field Master
  7. I removed 2 of legs from a cheap tripod to see if I can get better results from my wheelchair. If it works out I will probably get a good monopod with a ball head. Tried camera raw for the first time. Whazup
  8. Here is another link from Luminous Landscape on Understanding Histograms And another Expose To The Right
  9. I just gave everone a good lesson in making an ass of oneself. I should have looked at more that just where Joe is from.
  10. Here is some info on Mary Dette that I came arcross. In the photos of her flies the BWO doesn't have the space, but all the the others do, except the wets. My question is answered. The Classics probably should be tied with the space. In the video it looks like she doesn't use a bobbin, justs clips her hackle pliers on the thread and lets in hang while she picks up materials. Photos of flies by Mary Dette Video of Mary Dette Tying A Grey Fox Good Article About Mary Dette Edit: Joe I just noticed you are from Roscoe, have you been to her shop? I love the reading about the history of fly fishing in the early days and there you are living in the heart of a lot of it. Please tell us some about some of your experiences.
  11. This thread has gotten me interested in these flies again. I found this link On Catskill Tiers and Flies It gives a little history about Elsie Darbee and shows some nice photos of flies tied by her, supposedly for Art Flicks book. The article notes that leaving space between the eye and fly head is NOT the way she tied them. Makes me wonder it more Catskill tiers left the space behind the eye than didn't and tied them like Elsie Darbee's.
  12. At one time I had a copy of the Art Flick's updated 1969 edition of Streamside Guide. It was an excellent book on tying Catskill flies. Maybe a guy could find a copy on ebay and read how one of the old timers did it. Here is a little blurb about the book. "Originally published in 1947, Art Flick’s Streamside Guide was the first truly pocket-sized guide to stream entomology. Updated in 1969, this practical tutorial on aquatic insects and fly tying is still an essential reference for the serious dry fly fisherman. These classic Catskill patterns and their dressings are a pinnacle of the fly tier’s art."
  13. Wulff, I enjoy Daniella's photos as well. Her site on pBase with the photos of the Snowy Owls are just incredible as are yours and Grahams and some of the others that are posting here now. That has been the case for me too. Still Trying, Bill
  14. I just checked my local library website and put a request in for "Understanding Exposure". I should get a call from them in a day or two that it is availabe for pick-up. Being able the check out books online is worth the tax money it takes to keep the system up. Now I can really read and look this book over before spending the money for it. This one isn't really that expensive but some like Scott Kelby's books on Photoshop are pricy.
  15. Graham, thanks for commenting on my recent photo. You pointed out elements of which I wasn't aware. I was just happy that I got the little bugger before it flew off.
  16. Here is one of my latest tries. I need to find some place where I can get to in my power chair that has some birds with a little more color. Female English Sparrow
  17. Man you guys make me envious. Those are some nice shots. I was wondering the same thing about the bird. Is that beak deformed or is it a characteristic of the species.
  18. Yep, it is Venus. Just checked Sky & Telescopes site. Tonight should be quite a site as well. Sky and Telescopes Web Site
  19. You didn't mention where the park was in Colorado, but if it was Rocky Mountain National Park they are probably Greenback Cutthroats and they are protected in the park because they are the last pure strain of that particular cutthroat that hasn't hybridized with the rainbow. They travel up these small little rivulets to spawn all dressed up in their finest colors.
  20. Wulff, I really like the Wood Ducks. Incredible Colors. Were those taken under overcast skies?
  21. my wife planted where grass was hard to grow.
  22. Here is a more recent shot of a Collared Dove. I ruined the links to my earlier shots my rearranging them at the site where I have them hosted. This is the first time I tried using Camera RAW.
