Bassturd, Thanks for hosting the Flatwing Swap and most of all thanks for getting me interested in Flatwing flies! I really like them and am interested in learning more about them and thier action. I will be trying them for silvers this year and hope to fish Kodiak again this fall. I also wanted to thank all the particpants in this swap. This is the first swap that I have entered that I was excited about each and every fly that I received! I also learned how I could improve my fly. It was obvious to me after seeing all of your flies that I had tied too short of a tail on mine. I reverted back to the length for freshwater streamers. After seeing the flies that you all tied, I reviewed the pattern and spotted my mistake. Thanks again! Moushka

( LAST CALL) Landlocked Salmon/Steelhead "Go-To Flies" Swap
Moushka replied to billb's topic in Fly Swaps & Contests
Bill, I received my flies yesterday and want to thank you for hosting the swap. I also want to thank you for the great Olive Cone Head Krystal Wooly Bugger (nicely tied!) with recipe. Tdeyette tied a great Estaz Comet! I confess that I plan on trying out both of thoses flies on siver salmon in Kodiak this fall! I am really looking foward to trying out Sukhoidave's Caddis Hornberg (beautifully tied!) and Manwitter's Sonefly Nymph on trout and landlocked salmon in local lakes. I'm saving RDL's Estaz Egg fly for Pink Salmon in Hope, Ak this year (It's gonna be a killer!). Thanks to all and tight lines! Moushka -
Bassturd, That sounds great! I am so looking forward to seeing it! Moushka

( LAST CALL) Landlocked Salmon/Steelhead "Go-To Flies" Swap
Moushka replied to billb's topic in Fly Swaps & Contests
Sorry! I forgot to send the update on the name of my fly. It's a Marabou Darter variation. I'm using Partridge #10 Redditch Bend 1 X long hooks. I should have them done by next week and ready to ship. Moushka -
Justin, The Skaddis is from The Art of Tying the Dry Fly by Skip Morris. I sent a couple of extra Skaddis Dark for you to try. I tied the Skaddis Light pattern for the swap. They are a very durable fly and look a little wierd as the wing is positioned further down the flies body than most Caddis dry flies. Have fun trying them out! Moushka

Posted my Skaddis Lights today. I ended up tying them on #16 fine - Partridge hooks. Moushka

I love my Ron Abby Special and find that I don't like tying on any other vice. It is so smooth to turn and just makes tying a real pleasure. Moushka

Moushka replied to billb's topic in Fly Swaps & Contests
I'm in..... But I can't think of the proper name of my fly! I'll have to go to the pattern book and look it up and get back to you. It will be for Southcentral Alaska. Moushka -

Skaddis Light on #14 Moushka

I'm in with a Skaddis Light (size 14 or under)! Moushka

I'm in! I'll tie the Rhody Flat Wing in the link. I gotta try it on Silver Salmon off Kodiak! Moushka
-
Mark, Thanks for the photo! It really helped me to get a better handle on the fly pattern. The picture that I found had no tinsel ribbing and the wing extending past the hook bend. I have about a dozen of those tied and I'll save them to fish with and tie the rest with the shorter wing and gold tinsel. Moushka
-
Mark, Could you post a picture of yellow and black from an original Tom Nixon pattern? The one posted from a previous swap says that gold tinsel was used in the orignial pattern and that one could use either yellow floss or chenille. I would like to see what Tom used originally. Thank you, Moushka
-
I would like to join the swap and tie the "yellow and black". Moushka
-
Royal Blue Large for me please! Moushka
-
Ray, Thanks for posting the instructions they really were easy to follow and helped demystify tube flies for me. Moushka

I got a couple of fly pattern books and a set of Orvis wing cutters, but best of all (I am so excited!) a fishing trip to Kodiak! Yippie! Yippie! Yippie!

I absolutely do not want to wash feathers unless they are bloody or dirty because I want the natural oils to be left in. I usually harvest feathers in the fall or winter, scrape and borax them, place loose feathers in plastic bags in the shed for the winter (which routinely goes down to –20) and I take the pelts to my rental locker (-40). In the spring trim the pelts, cut them up in sections according to use and place them in smaller individual plastic bags for long term storage. If I have a bunch that I want to store for years I place the small bags in a larger bag and vacuum seal it. I have not had a varmint yet or stron smell yet and have been doing this for about 10 years. I only wash feathers if I can't easily replace them or want to dye them. I first try plain tap water and gently massage the dirt/blood away. If soap is needed I use the cheapest baby shampoo that I can find and that usually does the trick. Next I de-grease before dyeing the feathers. When finished I dry them and treat as previously noted above. I no longer use any mothballs as the odor is too strong and is offensive to most people. I find materials previously stored with mothballs must be aired for weeks before I bring them into the house and I can’t sell any flies or trade materials unless them are aired out because people don’t want them! I now store my tying materials in large plastic bins and use scented oils placed on a scrap of cloth in the bin. So far no problem and I even have occasional visitors, which I would not have if I used mothballs! Please note that I have found the more pest infestations with pet parrots then anyother source and am extra careful with them (nuke in microwave).

I like my portable drop leaf table for the time being. However, I am planning to build a larger kidney shaped portable table with front slide out tying area and rear drop leaf this summer. I think will always want a tying table in the front room; there's just something about tying before a crackling fire that I really enjoy.
