  1. At the risk of opening a can-O-worms; I first started my grandson at 4 but quickly moved him to a Tenkara rod where he could practice casting without worrying about line management, hauling, etc. until he had the casting basics down. He now (16) is very adept at using a western fly rod as well as a Tenkara rod. Age 4 is probably too young but he showed a genuine interest so off we went. He also (with help casting) caught his first trout which really got him hooked and has been one of my fishing partners for the last 12 yrs. Only problem now is he discovered that girls don't really have cooties and has less time to fish.
  2. The past couple of days I kept getting the message that the website couldn't be found. Anybody else have yhe same problem?
  3. I can't remember the last time I bought a fly. Probably back in my early teen years. I probably would be far ahead money wise if I bought instead of tying as I have quite a large amount of tools and materials but I do it for me and myself. I enjoy it and because I can do it. As mentioned, Tenkara style flies are a little difficult to buy except through Tenkara USA or ebay and are so simple that several can be tied in less time to order or to drive to Boulder. Kind of like "How many rods do I really need or how many reels" (as many as I can get).
  4. This is first time that I've gotten in in the last 2 days
  5. Quite a box, little hard to carry around stream side.
  6. Think this is a bait holder to carry your bait (crickets, hoppers, etc.), like the old tobbaco tin for carrying worms.
  7. Bought a $2 coffee grinder at the thrift store, gather yarn, floss, etc. from ladies that knit or do embroidery work along with what ever kind of fur I can find at the local thrift store. Throw in some left over thread tag ends, tinsel, flash, etc. Good majority of the mixed dubbing is used in dubbing brushes. Do I save money? about as much as I save tying my own flies or making my own furled leaders. But I enjoy seeing what I come up with and if I don't like it, then I round file it. Every once in awhile I end up with something I would not use on a regular fly but I use on a Tenkara fly that makes the fly a little more flashy than normal. Like most hobbies, I do it for me.
  8. Had a chance to fish in Smokey Mountain National Park for about an hour today. Caught a beautiful little rainbow, very vibrant colors, missed a couple using one of my Tenkara Rods. Hope to fish a little more tomorrow and Wed.
  9. Yes, Yes and Yes. Use 1 on an old bamboo rod for balance and the others on old fiberglass rods, 7 and 8 wts. Had for many years.
  10. Years ago, fishing for brookies in beaver ponds, using nothing but a plain gold hook; no feathers, no yarn, no floss, and no worms, just the hook. And yes, we were catching fish after fish.
  11. Working much much better
  12. Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?'
  13. As Poopdeck said; drink more water.
  14. Depends on what bench I'm using. If NorVise then I am generally standing or using a tall stool. If I'm using my other vises then in an office chair. In both cases, the tying desks have double drawers so the tying surface is elevated. I seldom tie more than 6 or 8 flies at a time on the NorVise so no problem with standing.
  15. Nope! Still haven't seen everything on this ole green planet that I would like too.
  16. Anyone familiar with this type bobbin? Couldn't find any model or manuf. on it. Picture doesn't show it very well but back of bobbin has a screw for setting tension.
  17. I have 2 different devices; Quick Tye Tool made by S&S Manufacturing, P.O. Box B7521, Loveland, CO. and the other has no name or company on it. It is black, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, maybe 3/4 wide. Has a magnet to hold the fly and a grove to run the tippet. You can place the fly point up (usual orientation) or point down; slide the tippet in the groove to thread. Of the two devices, I prefer the second one. The first one has a slot to put the fly eye and then the tippet is run through a funnel; not as easy for me to use. My attempts to include a picture do not turn out well.
  18. I've used the C&F threader but don't really like it as sometimes it's hard for me to insert the threader on small flies. I have also used a magnetic dohickie (don't know what i's called or who makes it) that puts the tippet through the eye of small flies. The device holds the fly with the eye in a ceertain place and has a groove for the tippet that aligns it with the eye. I'll dig through my gear to see if I can find the name of it. Bought it at a tackle shop. Good luck with your friend.
  19. Thanks for that info Chugbug27; I'll have to try making a leader from it. I've used it in patterns but never thought about a leader.

Still have one and still use it on road trips.
  21. I use furled leaders for everything, made from 2 or 4lb mono. I carry a 5', 7', and 9' with me and since I use a loop to loop of leader to flyline I can change the length pretty fast, although the majority of the time I use the 9' with 3 to 4' tippet. 90% of my leaders are mono as I'm not a fan of threaded leaders. I don't really target bass but if I did I would just use heavier mono to start with. Most of my casts are overhead on a stream but I've never had the problem of water spraying on me.
  22. Flytire; Did you use regular pinking shears to cut the foam or a special type of shears. Last time I tried to cut foam like yours I made a big mess of the whole thing and ended up tossing everything to the round file. Maybe I should try again.
  23. There are 3 offers of decals/stickers lots on ebay that I saw this morning. Don't know if any of them are what you are looking for or would meet your wants. I think the price was around $20 per lot.
