  1. Is anyone familiar with the fishing in this area? Is it good? What species. Thanks!
  2. I turn 42 on the 23rd and I guess that has me thinking. Where do I want to hunt or fish next (I love trips). So what are the bucket lists for you folks? I plan on doing Mongolia with my son for taimen some day. I'd also like to catch a grander blue marlin.
  3. This is one awesome looking fly. I was just wondering if you thought icelandic sheep would be an appropriate substitute for the arctic fox and if uv estaz would be an appropriate substitute for the ice dub body?
  4. Try a mailing tube. You could get one for free from a store that carries rods. They are made of heavy cardboard. You could wrap your rod in bubble wrap on the inside. Good luck on your journey!
  5. I am trading/selling my large, fast bass boat for a shallow water boat. I really don't need the bass boat as I don't use it much and all my buddies have bass boats and I can fish with them. Over the past 3 to 4 years I have really taken a liking to fly fishing and tying. I want a boat to traverse big tailwaters behind southern reservoirs primarily the Cumberland river in southern Kentucky and the Clinch in east Tennessee. The tailwaters are big, however, there are rocky shoals that would be shallow when there is little or no generation. I had thought about getting an alumacraft or war eagle jon with a 40hp jet outboard, a kicker engine, and a trolling motor. Some of the factors that would be of concern with me are: (1) I have a 6 year old son that I would like to take with me, (2) stability of the watercraft, (3) I suffered a shattered spine this summer that required extensive surgery and rehabilitation that is ongoing so comfort is a concern, and (4) durability as I want something that is not going to tear up on the rocks. I would really like to hear some of your thoughts?
  6. Never fished there but did fish the Mexican carribean, isla blanca. The guides did not like the flexo crab. They much preferred del brown patterns for permit. Snook they used deceivers (white with blue and white with chartreuse). Bonefish crazy Charlies and gotchas. Baby tarpon tarpon toads green and purple. I am no expert on this but thought I would pass on the experience. Permit are very difficult to catch if you catch a large one you have really accomplished something. A good guide would be well worth the money. Have a great time. Sorry for all the rambling.
  7. I'm real interested in your techniques. I have caught large trout there but it was not with flies. Rather, it was when the generators were operating at a high level and the fish were in the turbulence. Big baits were key. Caught rockfish and rainbows. Your technique is very different than the local guides that recommend nymphing and midges.
  8. I have a renzetti and wondered the same. It looks like the band that we used to castrate bull calves. Multitasking.
  9. Hey Laxi I for one would love to see more fish photos like the one in your signature! Not straying from the topic, was it caught on a streamer?
  10. Are rabbit zonkers appropriate substitutes for squirrel when tying the slump buster? If so, are there any recommended modifications?
  11. I'm new to the fly fishing and tying world but have fished and hunted my whole life. Upland hunting is my true passion. I have always thought it a waste to discard all the beautiful plumage from the birds. I know pheasant is a staple but what about the feathers from bobwhite, ruffed grouse, woodcock and the occasional oddball bird. Are they useful for any certain patterns? Wild turkey?
  12. Thanks to those that replied.
  13. I tried your suggestion and apparently there aren't any.
  14. I live very close yet have never fly fished for trout only bass and the occasional saltwater trip on vacation. What patterns work at various times of the year and how do you tie them. I am new to the fly fishing world.
